Materials Scientist – Rare Earth Extraction

to support the

Argonne National Laboratory

in

Lemont, IL . Responsibilities

Receive, log, prepare, and handle coal fly ash and other solid‑waste feedstocks. Perform leaching, separations, and related wet‑chemistry steps following standardized protocols and batch records. Prepare solids and liquids for analysis (e.g., ICP‑MS sample prep, XRF/XRD pellets/powders, SEM stubs) and coordinate submissions to Argonne or third‑party labs. Assist with reactor setup, operation, monitoring, and basic troubleshooting; track operating conditions and deviations. Maintain detailed electronic and/or bound laboratory notebooks; assemble datasets, calculations, and observations; contribute to internal technical reports. Maintain inventories of chemicals, consumables, and lab supplies; perform routine equipment care, calibrations, and housekeeping. Adhere to all safety, waste handling, and environmental procedures; participate in required training. Provide weekly updates to the Technical Representatives and promptly flag issues affecting safety, schedule, or data quality. Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field; or equivalent hands‑on laboratory experience. Demonstrated proficiency in wet‑lab techniques (solution prep, sample digestion, titrations, solid‑liquid separations). Familiarity with analytical methods for solid and liquid characterization (e.g., ICP‑MS, XRF, XRD, SEM) sufficient to perform high‑quality sample preparation and engage with analysts. Ability to follow detailed experimental protocols and document results with accuracy and attention to detail. Strong organizational skills, reliability, and a commitment to laboratory safety.
