Automotive Mechanic – U.S. Customs and Border Protection Organization:

Pay Range

Base pay: $31.00/yr – $36.00/yr (WG‑10, Step 1 to Step 5)

Summary Position located in Pine Valley, CA; San Diego, CA; San Ysidro, CA; Santee, CA; Chula Vista, CA.

Duties

Diagnose, repair, and overhaul major vehicle components and systems such as engines, transmissions, differentials, transaxles, electronic fuel injection systems, and emission control systems.

Assist supervisors in planning work programs, scheduling, parts ordering, purchasing, and other operational functions.

Make independent judgments regarding repair scope and execute repairs with minimal supervision.

Perform troubleshooting tests and techniques using test equipment, inspections, and auditory tests.

Ensure all vehicle systems function in accordance with manufacturer specifications and safety regulations.

Requirements

U.S. Citizen.

Male applicants born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with Selective Service.

Proof of Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.

All pre‑employment processes conducted in English.

Background investigation required.

Compliance with CBP drug‑testing and DHS Drug‑Free Workplace Plan.

Adherence to federal ethics and conflict‑of‑interest rules.

Qualifications

Experience performing troubleshooting, repairing, rebuilding, and adjusting major vehicle components.

Ability to interpret and apply manufacturer repair manuals, technical specifications, schematics, and diagnostic codes.

Ensure vehicle systems meet safety regulations set by regulatory agencies.

Strong knowledge of complex major system installation and troubleshooting.

Proficiency with hand and power tools, specialized test equipment.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Additional Information

Must possess a valid, non‑restricted driver’s license and be able to operate a Government Owned Vehicle.

Work Conditions: Frequent lifting up to 40–50 lbs, extended periods in uncomfortable positions, exposure to drafts, noise, fumes, dirt, and grease; requires use of safety shoes, glasses, and respirators.

Travel may be required.

Overtime and shift work, including call‑back and emergency Overtime, may be regular.

Uniforms and protective clothing required.

Eligible for Creditable Service for Annual Leave accrual.
