Under general supervision, a Teacher-Child Development Center leads the classroom team in maintaining a nurturing classroom environment that offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum meeting the needs of the individual children and families. The role is aligned with the educational and philosophical goals of the program and includes supervision and mentoring of teacher assistants, aides, practicum students, and volunteers.

Essential Duties

Adheres to the National Association for Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Code of Ethical Conduct, demonstrating a professional attitude, work ethic, and respect for children, families, and colleagues.

Develops and implements a child‑centered, play‑based curriculum promoting language, literacy, cognition, social‑emotional well‑being, and physical health.

Ensures classroom team and curriculum align with Center’s goals, accreditation standards, licensing requirements, and funding source/ grant regulations.

Provides a nurturing, stimulating, non‑punitive, culturally sensitive environment that encourages language, self‑expression, exploration, creativity, imaginative play, thinking skills, and positive relationships.

Maintains a safe, clean, orderly, and healthy environment, teaching children personal hygiene, hand washing, and safety practices.

Reports accidents, injuries, illnesses to parents and supervisors, and reports suspected abuse or neglect as a mandated reporter under state law.

Maintains positive relationships with parents through daily contact, scheduled conferences, and written progress reports.

Oversight and completion of paperwork, logs, records, and documentation for assessing individual children and the class as a whole.

Supervises and mentors teacher assistants, student teachers, work‑study students, volunteers, and practicum students, providing guidance on lesson planning and classroom interactions.

Participates in monthly district teacher meetings, sharing information on child development, classroom strategies, and professional development opportunities; may provide workshops as required.

Implements team meetings with classroom and support staff to discuss curriculum, classroom activities, and strategies for addressing student needs.

Works with District’s Education Manager and Site Directors to ensure classroom quality, complying with action and professional development plans created by the Site Director and Education Manager.

Attends professional development sessions and gateway‑approved training provided by state and city agencies (e.g., DFSS, CPS) and other outside resources.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Child Development or Early Childhood Education.

Master’s Degree preferred; bilingual preferred.

Illinois Professional Education License in Early Childhood Education (formerly type 04 teaching certificate).

Illinois Gateway ICE credential minimum level 4 or willingness to obtain within 1 year of employment.

ESL and/or bilingual endorsement preferred.

Two years of work experience with children in a preschool setting.

Warm, supportive attitude towards children and their families.

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability

Knowledge of child development and early childhood education.

Knowledge of teaching strategies and understanding of physical, social, cognitive, and emotional student needs.

Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.

Ability to work within a culturally diverse environment and handle situations with tact and diplomacy.

Ability to create developmentally appropriate lessons and interact positively with children, staff, and practicum students.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand for extended periods of time.

Other Information

This position is represented by Local 1600 CCCTU.

Starting salary: $69,545, determined by collective bargaining agreement, applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Chicago residency required for all full‑time employees within six months of hire.
