Qualifications
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
Degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
Current‑full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia
Residency Training: physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
Approved residencies: ACGME-accredited core specialty training programs, AOA-accredited programs, or other residencies followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs)
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis; they are not considered independent practitioners, will not be privileged, and must have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
Proficiency in spoken and written English
Board Certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (refer to https://www.va.gov/ohrm/QualificationStandards/)
Physical Requirements: predominantly office‑based, sedentary setting; no manual labor above ordinary situations; must be capable of using a computer for electronic charting
Duties & Responsibilities
Supervise all individuals within the service line
Complete administrative tasks and supervise interim and annual performance appraisals
Perform credentialing, privileging, and related tasks such as FPPEs, OPPEs, FCCR for Cause
Conduct quality assessment and improvement initiatives, including a 10% retrospective review of all anatomic pathology cases
Participate in facility quality management activities and high reliability organization (HRO) activities
Perform and direct coding of surgical reports with CPT and SNOMED codes
Report critical incidents to the VISN Chief Pathology Consultant
Participate in multidisciplinary conferences such as tumor boards
Train and supervise pathology residents, medical students, and staff
Maintain turnaround time requirements for cases and adhere to VHA pathology policy
Comply with CAP, TJC, and VHA policies and procedures
Support educational interactions with laboratory technicians, transcriptionists, technologists, supervisors, lab managers, and administrative staff
Ensure mandatory training, competency, computer skills, and confidentiality requirements are met
Benefits & Compensation
Recruitment/Relocation Incentive authorized for highly qualified individuals
