Overview
ASSOCIATE MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS CLINICIAN - Bureau of Behavioral Health, Chicago Department of Public Health. Number of Positions: One (1). Starting Salary: $79,260. This bid/job announcement has been extended through November 11, 2025.
Location and Schedule Location: 1920 S Western Ave, Chicago, IL 60608
Days: Monday - Friday
Hours: 9:30 AM - 5:30 PM
Hours and days are subject to change based on program needs. This role is expected to work primarily in the field.
Responsibilities
Responds in collaboration with crisis response team members to 911 calls, 311 calls, and incidents via city-managed referral pathways to patients with a behavioral health component.
Provides immediate and ongoing crisis assessments, crisis intervention, de-escalation, safety planning, referrals, and linkages to persons experiencing a mental health crisis.
Consults with Mental Health Crisis Clinicians or other licensed personnel to improve crisis intervention, care coordination, and community-based mental health services.
Prepares and maintains detailed, confidential documentation including progress notes and outcomes of crisis interventions in compliance with department and city standards.
Collaborates with team members on ongoing case management and community-based mental health interventions.
Provides follow-up (in-person or telephonic) to ensure appropriate mental health care delivery.
Delivers compassionate, trauma-informed services that respect individual needs and values.
Connects individuals with necessary resources to support recovery and well-being.
Participates in team/department meetings, in-services, and case coordination sessions.
Coordinates with fire and police communication staff during calls involving behavioral health emergencies.
Other duties as required.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Master's or Doctorate degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a directly related field from an accredited college or university.
Licensure, Certification or Other Qualifications
A valid State of Illinois driver's license is required at time of hire.
Current license as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Licensed Social Worker (LSW). If you hold a pre-terminal clinical license in another state, you must demonstrate the ability to establish the Illinois license within 6 months of hire.
Working Conditions
Operates out of a vehicle when in the field.
General office environment and exposure to outdoor environments.
Ability to work flexible on-call hours; hours may change based on program needs.
Must be comfortable responding to calls in communities across the city.
Equipment
Standard office equipment; computers and peripheral equipment.
Other equipment as required for crisis response activities.
Physical Requirements
Ability to walk and stand for extended periods.
Ability to run, bend, kneel, crouch, and move hands/arms to grasp or manipulate objects.
Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
Knowledge, Skills, Attributes, and Abilities
Learning and implementing trauma-informed principles and practices.
Mental health care principles, practices, and procedures.
Methods of psychotherapy and counseling.
Linkage to community resources.
Crisis de-escalation techniques.
Diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of mental health conditions; privacy rules and HIPAA compliance.
Understanding of cultural differences and their intersections with race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, and religion.
Knowledge of applicable City and department policies and regulations.
Selection and Preferences Selection requires an interview, possibly with a written exercise or skills assessment. Preferences may be given to candidates with: experience with patients with serious mental illness; experience working with multidisciplinary teams; bi-lingual Spanish is a plus.
