Summary The Health Technician (Ophthalmology) position is in the Surgery Service at the VA Boston Healthcare System (Jamaica Plain campus). The two‑page resume requirement does not apply to this occupational series. For more information, refer to Required Documents below.
Qualifications
Citizenship: Citizen of the United States.
Experience and Education (1) – One year of experience in a health‑care field such as nursing, medical assistant, or health technician.
Experience and Education (2) – Two years above high school with a minimum of six semester hours directly related to a health‑care field or an associate’s degree in a health‑care related field.
Experience and Education (3) – Equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying. Examples include: six months of health‑care experience and one year of education; six months of experience and a course for health‑care technicians; six months of experience and an independent study course in Ophthalmic Medical Assisting.
Certification: All applicants must be certified as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) with the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
Grade Determinations:
GS‑5 (Entry Level) – None beyond the basic requirements.
GS‑6 (Developmental Level 1) – One year of experience equivalent to the GS‑5 grade level.
GS‑7 (Developmental Level 2) – One year of experience equivalent to the GS‑6 grade level.
GS‑8 (Full Performance Level) – One year of experience equivalent to the GS‑7 grade level.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): Vary by grade, including basic screening procedures, equipment operation, patient history documentation, and more advanced diagnostic and surgical assisting skills at higher grades.
Duties
The incumbent serves as a member of the Ophthalmology Section at the VA Boston Healthcare System.
Perform advanced tonometry and pupil evaluation; conduct pachymetry, corneal topography, and refraction; operate automated visual field testing equipment.
Administer eye medications, including anesthetic eye drops and dilating agents; assist during clinic‑based ophthalmic surgery.
Obtain patient histories, including chief complaint, vitals, ocular and general history, family history, social history, and medication reviews.
Record examinations, diagnoses, and treatment plans in the medical record in a timely manner.
Maintain and calibrate ophthalmic instruments; ensure proper cleaning and disinfection of equipment and workstations.
Support staff with scheduling, triage, and patient education; document findings; order supplies and report needed repairs to biomedical engineering.
Work schedule: Monday‑Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
