Department of Transportation Job Description and Duties

Under general direction of the Deputy District Director for Transportation Planning, Local Assistance and Environmental Analysis (PLAE), a CEA-A, the incumbent is responsible for overseeing Transportation Planning business processes and the delivery of key work products within the Transportation Planning program. The incumbent is responsible for setting priorities for the delivery of all System and Regional Planning activities, overseeing transportation planning engagement and outreach activities within the district, and working on politically sensitive efforts involving partner agency staff and elected officials. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for establishing and managing cross-branch and cross-functional collaborative business practices and tools within Transportation Planning, managing Transportation Planning resource and workload commitments, overseeing administrative activities within the PLAE Division, and directing staff training and development for all Transportation Planning related functions. Duty Statement . Working Conditions

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate. Minimum Requirements

Pursuant to California Code of Regulations § 549.90, this position will be filled via the California Department of Transportation Managerial Selection Program (MSP) process. This is a Caltrans Promotional examination. Applicants must have a permanent civil service appointment with the Department of Transportation and meet the minimum qualifications by the final filing date to participate in the examination. Minimum Qualifications: Either I: One year of experience in the California state service performing transportation planning or transportation management duties in a class comparable in level of responsibility to Senior Transportation Planner. Or II: Experience: Five years of responsible experience conducting difficult and complex transportation planning or research projects. One year must have been comparable in level of responsibility to work performed by a Senior Transportation Planner in the California state service. Education: Equivalent to graduation from college. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on the basis of one year of experience equal to one year of education.) Application Instructions
