Emerald Cloud Lab
Join to apply for the
Environmental, Health & Safety Manager
role at
Emerald Cloud Lab .
About ECL The Emerald Cloud Laboratory (ECL) enables life scientists to move out of the lab and conduct research entirely from a computer.
By moving away from manual bench work, scientists on the ECL leverage the remote, automated execution of all standard biology and chemistry experiments in Emerald’s industrial lab facilities.
The platform supports all stages of research workflows, from experimental design to data analysis.
Key Responsibilities Regulatory Compliance & Reporting
Serve as the primary liaison for regulatory agencies (e.g., OSHA, EPA, state DEP, local fire department, POTW).
Ensure compliance with the OSHA Laboratory Standard (29 CFR 1910.1450) and all other applicable regulations.
Prepare and submit all required environmental and safety reports, including but not limited to EPA RCRA biennial reports, Tier II, and air/water permits.
Monitor regulatory changes and update all site‑specific policies, procedures, and training programs accordingly.
Program Management & Development
Develop, manage, and continuously improve the site’s core EH&S programs, including:
Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP): Serve as the site’s designated Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO).
Biosafety Program: Manage and update the Biosafety Plan, conduct risk assessments for BSL‑2 operations, and oversee decontamination and autoclave validation procedures.
Hazardous Waste Management (RCRA): Oversee all aspects of hazardous and biohazardous waste, including characterization, labeling, satellite and central accumulation, and coordination with disposal vendors.
Emergency Response Plan: Lead the emergency response team, coordinate drills (spill, fire, evacuation), and manage first aid/CPR/AED programs.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Manage the PPE program, conduct hazard assessments, and ensure proper selection, fit testing (if applicable), and availability.
Training & Culture
Develop and conduct engaging EH&S training for new hires and annual refreshers (e.g., Laboratory Standard, Biosafety, RCRA, Hazard Communication/GHS, Spill Response).
Lead the site Safety Committee, fostering active participation from all departments.
Promote a proactive safety culture by maintaining a visible presence on the lab floor, providing coaching to staff, and empowering employees to identify and report hazards.
Operational Oversight
Conduct routine safety audits, risk assessments, and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) to proactively identify and mitigate risks.
Lead all incident, accident, and near‑miss investigations, utilizing root cause analysis (RCA) to implement effective corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs).
Manage the site’s Safety Data Sheet (SDS) inventory.
Oversee the maintenance and inspection of all safety equipment (e.g., fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, fire extinguishers, safety showers, eyewash stations).
Maintain all EH&S documentation, training records, and compliance logs in an audit‑ready state.
Qualifications and Skills
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, Industrial Hygiene, or a closely related scientific field.
Experience:
Minimum of 5–7 years of progressive EH&S experience.
Direct, hands‑on experience in a commercial laboratory, pharmaceutical, chemical, or similar R&D/QC environment.
Demonstrated experience managing both chemical safety (OSHA Lab Standard, RCRA) and biological safety (BSL‑2) programs.
Knowledge:
Expert‑level knowledge of OSHA (29 CFR 1910.1450), EPA (RCRA), and DOT regulations.
Strong understanding of chemical hazards, risk assessment, and industrial hygiene principles.
Strong understanding of biosafety principles, containment, and decontamination (familiarity with BMBL).
Skills:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively train and present to diverse groups.
Proven leadership and interpersonal skills; ability to influence change and build consensus.
Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and root cause analysis skills.
Highly organized, self‑motivated, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced setting.
