Overview
Purdue University Libraries and School of Information Studies seeks an Archivist for Metadata and Discovery. The successful candidate will join a cohort of experienced archivists within Purdue University Archives and Special Collections. This five-year term position will lead in the development of metadata policies informing discovery best practices across the entire unit. In partnership with the Archivist for Flight and Space Exploration, the Archivist for Digital Preservation, and the Libraries Digital Programs, the Archivist for Metadata and Discovery will collaborate on a five-year project to digitize the Neil A. Armstrong papers and ensure project goals are met within its time frame. The Armstrong papers contain over 200 cubic feet of personal papers of renowned astronaut and Purdue alumnus Neil A. Armstrong. Armstrong is best known for his role in the Gemini and Apollo space programs as well as being the first person to step foot on the moon. Responsibilities
Collaborate with colleagues to establish and streamline digital collections metadata best practices and strategies, including establishing metadata policies, creation, long-term management, and online access standards. Prepare archival collections for digitization by creating robust metadata for use in collection descriptions (finding aids) and online digital collections. Increase accessibility to important archival materials for graduate and undergraduate instruction and international scholarly research. Provide research assistance and researcher consultation. The salary range for this position is $53,800 - $60,500 commensurate with experience and education. The position is benefits eligible. Education and Experience Qualified Candidates Will Need Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program in library, archival, or information science with successful completion of graduate coursework in archives Minimum one (1) year of experience in a library, archives, or museum setting Experience creating metadata content using standards such as EAD, Dublin Core, MODS, METS, PREMIS, or MARC Experience and advanced knowledge of controlled vocabularies and/or thesauri, such as LCSH, AAT, etc. Experience and knowledge working with copyright, open access, intellectual property, and fair use standards Experience processing archival collections and creating archival description using DACS Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. Skills Needed Demonstrated success managing short and long-term projects Demonstrated ability to work individually, collaboratively, and collegially in a complex, rapidly changing team environment Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills What Is Helpful Experience with large digitization projects Experience with metadata migration Experience implementing and maintaining online accessibility guidelines and best practices (i.e. WCAG guidelines, Title II) Experience using CONTENTdm, LibNova\'s LibSafe and Open Access, or similar digital asset management systems Familiarity with archival collections management systems or databases, such as ArchivesSpace Additional Information
