Summary The Hampton VA Medical Center is a 1-C - teaching facility serving Eastern Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina. The main campus is located in Hampton - VA with 4 community-based outpatient clinics in Chesapeake, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach - VA; and Elizabeth City - NC. Hampton VAMC provides comprehensive health care which includes primary care, acute inpatient, acute psychiatric, chronic spinal cord injury, an 169-bed domiciliary and a long‑term Community Living Center/hospice care unit.
Responsibilities
Conduct initial psychiatric evaluations – including initial assessment interviews, history and physical exams
Lab, imaging, medication and psychotherapy consultation orders – aftercare plans and follow‑up visits
Following the initial evaluation – the PA will provide appropriate follow‑up care including reassessments of diagnoses and conditions, medication adjustments, and any further tests or consults indicated
Provide mental‑health education / counseling and brief therapy of patients and their families
Primary responsibility for care of patients when the clinic medical director is absent
Conduct ongoing follow‑up appointments for stable patients – including regular refills of medications, required labs and other tests, and documenting progress
Perform examinations and screening scales (such as AIMS, MoCA, HAM‑D) and similar non‑invasive examinations specific to the ongoing care of psychiatric patients
Evaluate outside consultations presenting to the mental‑health clinic and determine the appropriate disposition, routing, and urgency of those consults
Facilitate access to the mental‑health clinic medical director and other staff for other health‑care providers
Participate in a quality‑assurance program with a multi‑disciplinary group developing criteria for administrative goals in the clinic

Work schedule: Weekend and evening hours may change per department needs (Wednesday / Saturday 6:00 pm‑4:30 am or Sunday / Wednesday 6:00 pm / 4:30 am) – 40 hours per week
Paid Time Off: 50 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays). Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% in contributions by VA insurance: federal health/vision/dental/term life/long‑term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)
