Summary
The primary purpose of the Financial Analyst position is to perform accounting and analytical duties to support the financial operations of M.D. Anderson Physicians Network (MDAPN) and M.D. Anderson Services Corporation (MDASC). These separate 501(c)(3) entities provide support services to MD Anderson Cancer Center and produce monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports for key stakeholders. The role includes month‑end close support, analysis of financial data, report generation, data validation and account reconciliations. Advanced proficiency with PeopleSoft Financials and Microsoft Excel is required.
Financial Reporting and Analysis
Prepare detailed financial reports, ensuring accuracy and clarity in income statements, balance sheets and cash flow reports.
Conduct variance analysis by comparing actual results to budgets and forecasts, identifying any discrepancies.
Analyze financial trends and provide insights on cost‑saving opportunities and ways to improve operational efficiencies.
Reconcile balance sheet accounts, ensuring proper documentation and addressing inconsistencies.
Budgeting, Forecasting and Financial Close
Assist in developing annual budgets and analyzing departmental spending patterns.
Support the monthly financial closing process, including the preparation of journal entries to record revenue, expenses, accruals, and necessary adjustments.
Create and refine financial forecasting models by leveraging historical data and trends to improve accuracy.
Collaborate with department leaders to align budgets with organizational goals, ensuring fiscal responsibility.
Compliance, Auditing and Financial Integrity
Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal accounting policies and regulatory standards.
Assist with the annual financial audit by preparing worksheets and reconciliations in response to auditors’ requests.
Maintain detailed financial documentation to support transparency and accountability in reporting.
Help prepare the annual Form 990 report to ensure accurate nonprofit financial reporting in accordance with IRS guidelines.
Data Interpretation and Communication
Communicate with cross‑functional teams to ensure alignment among accounting, finance and operations.
Support leadership in making data‑driven decisions by contributing to the overall financial strategy.
Technical and Analytical Skills
Develop and refine financial models using Excel, PeopleSoft ERP and other accounting and Microsoft Office tools.
Utilize advanced data techniques, such as trend projections and sensitivity analysis, to improve forecast accuracy.
Approach financial challenges with a problem‑solving mindset, identifying creative and practical solutions.
Other Operational Duties
Assist leadership with ad‑hoc financial analysis, support company‑wide initiatives and contribute to financial planning efforts across the department.
Maintain and update SOP documentation for financial reporting, monthly close processes, reconciliations and audit preparation.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
Experience: Minimum two years of business experience in accounting, financial analysis or auditing. Preferred 3–7 years with extensive use of Microsoft Excel, GAAP understanding, reconciliations and audit procedures.
Knowledge of PeopleSoft Financials highly desirable.
Detail‑oriented, strong time‑management skills and a self‑starter mentality.
Location: Prefer candidates in the Houston local area; remote within Texas only is acceptable.
