Orthotist-Prosthetist – U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs We are seeking an Orthotist-Prosthetist to provide orthotic and prosthetic services for the Greater Los Angeles VA Medical Center.

Pay Range Base pay: $110,535.00 – $143,689.00 per year (vesting based on performance).

Summary The Orthotist-Prosthetist will design, fit, and manage orthotic and prosthetic devices for veterans in a multidisciplinary clinical setting, ensuring optimal function, comfort, and rehabilitation outcomes.

Qualifications Applicants must meet all basic requirements and be board certified by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics (ABC) or the Board for Orthotist/Prosthetist Certification (BOC). Candidates may be referred or tentatively selected before certification is completed, but hiring proceeds only when all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements

Citizenship:

United States citizenship, or non‑citizen only if no qualified citizen applicants are available per VA policy.

English Proficiency:

Proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).

Education:

Bachelor’s degree or higher in orthotics and prosthetics from a CAAHEP‑accredited program, OR a bachelor’s degree in any major plus a post‑graduate orthotics or prosthetics certificate from a CAAHEP‑accredited program.

Foreign graduates:

Must prove a minimum bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or equivalent via credential evaluation.

Certification:

Current ABC or BOC board certification. Certification must be maintained with continuing education.

Technology and knowledge of advanced medical terminology, biomechanics, kinematics, physics, and disease etiology.

Experience equivalent to GS‑09 grade level, 1 year of orthotic/prosthetic practice in a hospital setting.

Preferred: ABC Board‑certified prosthetist and orthotist.

Physical requirements: ability to exert up to 50 lb force occasionally and 25 lb frequently.

Assignments & Duties

Conduct comprehensive patient histories, including demographics, work history, and medical status.

Perform functional clinical examinations: manual muscle testing, gait assessment, sensory testing, range of motion, joint stability, skin integrity.

Determine orthotic/prosthetic recommendations and formulate treatment goals to reduce pain and enhance functional independence.

Consult with physicians and other providers to modify treatment plans as needed.

Educate patients and caregivers on device use, potential risks, and care plans.

Select appropriate materials and techniques for the treatment plan.

Provide preparatory care, including diagnostic splinting and residual‑limb sizing.

Collect subjective feedback on comfort, function, and satisfaction.

Document patient functional levels and adapt plans accordingly.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm. Telework is not available.

Seniority Level Mid‑Senior Level, full performance level GS‑11.
