Job Overview The Senior Manager Category is responsible for all areas of functional and strategic category management and related merchandising activities (e.g., Category Manager Teams, vendor negotiations) that pertain to assigned categories. Accountable for the sales, margin, and expense control P&L contribution for the assigned team. Additionally, this person is responsible for supervising, training, setting goals, and developing the assigned staff.

Category merchandising involves business planning, financial analysis, pricing, assortment review, shelf management, advertising promotions, supplier negotiations, and sourcing. The goal is to increase sales and profitability through a robust category strategy that satisfies customer demographics and lifestyles.

Job Responsibilities

Ensures merchandising plans/programs are developed to achieve sales targets, including advertising, ad quality, show assortment, deal depth, and seasonal planning.

Responsible for sales and gross profit results for assigned categories.

Supervises Category Managers and support staff to coordinate category activities that impact regional performance and sales.

Attains assigned goals despite program complexity, handles multiple priorities, and develops competitive programs.

Works closely with the sales team to communicate programs and achieve sales targets.

Provides direction, sets, and monitors goals for the Category Manager Team.

Ensures SOX compliance and all legal/tax compliance for assigned categories.

Oversees New Item Speed‑to‑Shelf process, first‑to‑market initiatives, and new‑item trend communication.

Oversees shelf‑management process and resolves vendor/customer issues.

Acts as a tactical, regional category strategy and program development lead.

Builds and maintains strategic customer relationships and partners on marketing program development.

Reviews period data to assess sales, service levels, and category profitability, making adjustments as needed.

Supports brand initiatives and collaborates on promotional plans execution.

Manages vendor chargeback approval for assigned categories.

Monitors P&L expense metrics such as aged inventory, supplier program income, and e‑pass management.

Communicates program sales results and identifies gap‑closure opportunities.

Conducts staff training, development, and supervision.

Maintains relationships with key retailers and performs category business planning.

Education / Certifications

Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Experience

Five (5) years of Category Management experience, with proven performance using category tools (e.g., syndicated data sources, category management applications).

Skills / Abilities

Proven supervision experience with performance‑management processes.

Strong financial understanding, including P&L responsibility.

Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.

Leadership and motivational ability to achieve results.

Proficient with spreadsheets, databases, and communication tools.

Analytical skills to measure sales performance and vendor funds.

Strong judgment and ability to handle interruptions.

Work Environment This is a remote role. Associates may be required to travel to company offices or distribution centers for meetings or business reasons.
