Overview San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is seeking a dynamic journey-level Stationary Engineer to join a world-class organization. As a Plant Operator and/or plant mechanic, you will operate and maintain a wide variety of complex machinery and equipment in a sewage treatment plant. Type of Appointment: Provisional (TPV) A provisional appointee must participate in and be successful in a Civil Service Examination process for this classification and be selected through an open competitive process to be considered for permanent appointment. Provisional appointments may not exceed three (3) years. Responsibilities (Essential Functions) Makes regular visual, audio, olfactory and tactile inspections and tests of plant machinery and equipment; maintains logs and records of maintenance and work orders; ensures safety and efficiency by monitoring gauges and meters. Collects and assesses raw sewage and chemical samples on schedule; performs chemical and physical assessments to ensure treatment process efficiency and compliance with the NPDES Permit. Operates, inspects, maintains, overhauls and repairs pumps, heating, ventilation, process machinery and equipment in wastewater treatment plants; lubricates, cleans and maintains equipment for safety and reliability. Inspects pipelines, tanks and gates for equipment condition, infiltration, blockages, mineral deposits; monitors drainage and flow indicators to identify problem areas. Operates and maintains solids treatment and flocculation systems; monitors indicators and analyzes samples to ensure optimum treatment. Operates disinfection and dechlorination systems; tests and analyzes samples to ensure proper chemical dosages and compliance with discharge requirements. May assist in training and supervising apprentices or trainees in sewerage treatment processes to ensure competent performance. Perform duties as listed in the 7372 Stationary Engineer, Sewage Plant class specification. Qualifications Minimum qualifications (reviewed for minimum requirements): Experience: Four (4) years of verifiable journey-level Stationary Engineer, Plant Operator and/or Plant Mechanic experience in operation, maintenance and repair of pumping, heating, air-conditioning, ventilating, and related plant machinery in wastewater treatment plants, or Completion of a recognized four-year Stationary Engineer Apprenticeship Program; OR Graduation from a recognized four-year Maritime Academy with a degree in Engineering or Technology; OR Possession of at least a 3rd Assistant Marine Engineer's License of any unrestricted horsepower; OR Possession of an FAA Airframe or Power Plant Certificate AND four (4) years of verifiable experience in an Airframe or Powerplant mechanic capacity that utilizes the certificate; AND License and Certification: Possession of a valid driver's license; AND Grade I or higher California Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate or Grade I or higher California Water Environment Mechanical Technology Certificate. Desirable Qualifications Grade II or higher California Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate. California Advanced Water Treatment Operator Certificate (AWTO). Experience working in a wastewater treatment plant. Availability to work flexible shifts, including evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays.
