Overview
UVA Health University Medical Center is seeking an experienced and strategic leader to serve as Director of Facility Operations. This newly established role reflects the growing operational demands of the Hospital Facilities department, overseeing more than $56 million in annual operating funds and 7.5 million square feet of space. The Director will provide focused and strategic leadership to ensure facilities operate safely, efficiently, and sustainably, overseeing property management, contracts, regulatory compliance, and emergency preparedness in close collaboration with the Director of Health System Physical Plant. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the operational vision of UVA Health and ensure the infrastructure that supports world-class patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Provides oversight of Medical Center property and lease management, including contract negotiation, space utilization, and landlord/tenant coordination.
Manages all contracted facilities-related services not covered by HSPP, such as HVAC, elevators, pest control, waste removal, and landscape/grounds maintenance.
Directs hazardous materials and waste management programs in alignment with local, state, federal, and institutional standards, coordinating with academic and system partners.
Oversees the Medical Center ID Badge Office, ensuring efficient operations and a high standard of customer service for employees, contractors, and visitors.
Partners closely with HSPP leadership to coordinate infrastructure planning, preventive maintenance, and shared system responsibilities.
Ensures ongoing compliance with all applicable codes and regulatory requirements, including Joint Commission, OSHA, DEQ, and EPA.
Leads emergency preparedness and response planning for facility-related incidents, including utility failures, environmental hazards, and natural disasters.
Develops, monitors, and optimizes operating budgets, ensuring effective use of resources and identification of cost-saving opportunities.
Implements performance metrics and continuous improvement initiatives to drive operational excellence, energy efficiency, and sustainability.
Supervises, mentors, and develops a team of facility management professionals and administrative staff; fosters a culture of accountability, service, and collaboration.
Participates in strategic planning efforts, including facility assessments, long-range planning, and infrastructure modernization projects.
Serves as the primary liaison for internal departments and external partners on matters related to facility operations, service delivery, and issue resolution.
Maintains detailed records and prepares reports for leadership and regulatory bodies as required.
Minimum Requirements Education: Bachelor’s degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, Business, Healthcare Administration, or a related field
Experience
7 years of combined experience in healthcare facilities planning, design, construction projects and/or operations
Knowledge of International Building Codes, Uniform Statewide Building Codes, and local zoning and building ordinances
Licensure: none
Preferred Qualifications Education: Master’s degree, healthcare facility specific training and/or extensive knowledge of Joint Commission standards
Experience: Background in Academic Medical Center environment
Licensure:
Licensure or professional registration as Architect or Engineer.
Class-A Contractor license, Project Management Professional and/or Certified Healthcare Constructor
Physical Demands This position is primarily office-based but requires occasional travel to on-site locations, which may involve walking, climbing stairs, or navigating uneven terrain. The role may occasionally require lifting materials up to 20 pounds and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Compensation and Benefits Position Compensation Range: $87,783.00 - $175,565.00 Annual
