Onto Innovation
Senior Mechanical Engineer
Onto Innovation is a leader in process control, integrating global‑scale operations with an advanced portfolio that spans 3D metrology from nanometer‑scale transistors to micron‑level die interconnects, macro defect inspection, metal interconnect composition, factory analytics, and lithography for advanced semiconductor packaging. Our broad offerings across the semiconductor value chain help customers solve critical yield, device performance, quality, and reliability challenges. Onto Innovation is committed to optimizing customers’ critical path of progress by making them smarter, faster, and more efficient.
Job Summary & Responsibilities We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to develop advanced hardware and tooling solutions for next‑generation metrology instruments. The role covers the full product lifecycle—from concept development and detailed design to prototyping, testing, and final release. The engineer may work independently or lead small teams, depending on project scope.
Develop hardware and tooling concepts.
Perform detailed design calculations, including stress, thermal, modal analyses (FEA/CFD) and vibration analysis.
Design optical mounts, sub‑micron precision adjustment mechanisms, and positioning systems.
Finalize designs through product release for current and future metrology instruments.
Architect basic mechatronic systems and select motors, sensors, drive components based on system requirements.
Recognize and design simple and elegant structures.
Justify and quantify performance‑based metrics that guided design decisions.
Demonstrate a highly collaborative and team‑oriented personality with a strong desire to succeed.
Work with 3‑D CAD design and finite element analysis; SolidWorks is preferred.
Create clear reports and documentation.
Perform stress, deflection and modal analysis using FEA programs.
Execute flow and thermal analysis using CFD/FEA programs.
Show technical depth in concept design of complex mechanical systems.
Operate manual machining and fabrication equipment such as mill, lathe and welding.
Depending on project scope, work alone or with a small team of engineers and designers.
Qualifications
5+ years of experience as a mechanical design engineer.
Bachelor’s degree or higher in science or engineering; preference for mechanical engineering.
Proficiency in motion control, including servo tuning, stage control and automation mapping.
Deep understanding of vibration analysis, modal analysis and VC (Vibration Criteria) standards.
Experience with isolation systems and designing for micron‑ and nanometer‑level accuracy.
Familiarity with system architecture, design requirements and technical specifications for high‑performance systems.
Proficiency with hand measurement tools.
Experience implementing motion control systems.
Experience with microcontrollers, Arduino, Pi.
Proficiency with accelerometers and spectrum analyzers to quantify and diagnose vibration.
Skill with contact and non‑contact measurement types, indicators, cap gages, interferometers, to measure mechanical errors and drifts.
Experience delivering high‑purity gases and basic LabView experience.
Experience with photo contamination prevention methods and DUV systems.
Experience designing mechanical systems for very clean environments, including semiconductor, biotech and food systems.
Skill in mathematical modeling software.
Strong background in precision mechanics, mechatronics and electromechanical system design.
Salary: $126,000–180,000.
Onto Innovation Inc. offers competitive salaries, a generous benefits package—including health, dental, vision, life, disability coverage, PTO, a 401(k) plan with employer match, and an Employee Stock Purchase Program (ESPP)—and health & wellness initiatives.
