Position
Principal Enterprise Architect – Long Term with VST Consulting, Inc. Locations: Chicago, IL or Houston, TX. Hybrid role: in‑office attendance 2–3 days per week.
Key Responsibilities
Play a key role in influencing United Airlines’ IT digital strategy and providing tactical architecture direction to ensure the enterprise can achieve the strategy.
Collaborate with domain architects, engineers, and leaders to develop technical standards, reference architectures, design patterns, opinion papers, and architecture decision frameworks that guide technology solutions, especially those requiring integration of multiple platforms, operating systems, and applications.
Develop and manage a technical strategy and coordinate adoption; architect enterprise guidance that conveys standard processes and common pitfalls for system design, infrastructure integrations, application development practices, and application runtime principles.
Manage the architecture review process by creating validation checklists, reviewing architectural artifacts, and providing domain‑specific guidance to drive alignment across the enterprise.
Lead cultural change for United cloud adoption; promote cloud services where appropriate and guide business solutions for cloud.
Apply architectural and engineering concepts to design solutions that meet operational requirements such as scalability, maintainability, security, reliability, extensibility, flexibility, availability, and manageability.
Conduct research, develop proof of concepts on emerging technologies, and recommend cost‑effective, functionally robust solutions; enforce and evangelize design patterns throughout the enterprise.
Identify new technologies, industry trends, and standard methodologies to incorporate into the architecture roadmap.
Translate business strategy into technical strategy and define end‑to‑end technology architectures that support the strategy.
Lead all aspects of the evaluation and selection of third‑party software packages (including SaaS) and design standard application configurations.
Develop and maintain relevant Enterprise Architecture artifacts and store them in the EA repository, including current state architecture, standards, reference architectures, and capability maps.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
7+ years of experience, with at least 5 years of relevant Enterprise Architecture experience.
Prior experience as a Principal Enterprise Architect, Chief Architect, or Head of Enterprise Architecture in a global organization.
Experience providing guidance and defining strategy for how companies should manage technology.
Experience working with Domain Architects and Solution Architects in Architecture Review Board (ARB), Architecture Portfolio Management, and Architecture Assessment.
Provide guidance, oversight, and coaching to Domain and Solution architects, and sign off on architecture designs.
Drive improvements of architecture processes, methodologies, and services to ensure quality of architecture assets.
Develop architecture metrics and plans to achieve results.
Technical writing skills for documenting environments and procedures.
Deep hands‑on experience in leading the design, development, and deployment of business software at scale.
Strong knowledge of technology infrastructure, network, compute, storage, and virtualization.
Deep experience with cloud computing technologies and workload transition challenges.
Fundamental knowledge of API management capabilities, microservices architectures, and service mesh technologies.
Strong background in API security, resiliency, and observability, including application performance management and caching technologies such as Redis.
Experience managing migration of systems and workloads from monolithic to microservices in the cloud.
Deep knowledge of enterprise identity and access management solutions for authentication and authorization.
Ability to adopt GenAI and Agentic AI capabilities to influence EA processes and build accelerators for core frameworks.
Ability to partner within and across teams to gain consensus and enable change.
Excellent communication skills for creating and sharing presentations to senior leaders, architects, developers, and other stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in Computer Science.
AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional (or similar).
Enterprise Architecture certification (e.g., TOGAF, Zachman, Gartner).
3–5 years of EA experience.
3–5 years of AWS experience.
Airline industry experience.
