Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities
Contribute to germplasm conservation research and implementation of current and new strategies for the cryopreservation of rare and endangered native Hawaiian plants.
Initiate and establish cryopreserved plant collections from the Micropropagation Laboratory in-vitro collection, collect and input research data, and provide analytical assistance to the Micropropagation Laboratory Manager.
Maintain the integrity of the Cryopreservation Program germplasm inventory through routine viability assessments.
Assist the Micropropagation Laboratory Manager in the filing of reports to regulatory agencies.
Ensure laboratory supplies and chemicals are accurately inventoried, maintained and re-stocked or ordered as necessary.
Prepare plant growth nutrient media, stock solutions, sterile lab supplies, and cryopreservation vitrification solutions.
Assist in delivering program information and research results at outreach events such as conferences, classes, meetings, tours, workshops, plant sales, and public and private events through presentations, talks, demonstrations and written material.
Assist the Micropropagation Laboratory Manager to develop and update training materials, lab protocol materials, and safety and operational guidelines.
Photo-document plant regrowth from cryopreservation storage, provide pictures needed for specific projects, and document pertinent research processes and/or findings.
Assist in conducting tours of the Hawaiian Rare Plant Program Facility as needed, and assist in answering any questions concerning the program, or redirect them to someone who will be able to provide appropriate answers.
Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Botany, Horticulture, plant science or related field and 0 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for laboratory work in micropropagation and/or cryopreservation techniques; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of plant micropropagation and cryopreservation demonstrated by knowledge, understanding, and ability to apply concepts and terminology.
Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with threatened and endangered plant species.
Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the area of micropropagation and cryopreservation laboratories.
Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
Demonstrated ability to work in a laboratory setting for extended periods of time.
Demonstrated manual dexterity to handle delicate plant tissues and tools using a stereomicroscope.
Some experience working in a plant micropropagation laboratory and as demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and application of general lab concepts, conduct, terminology, and equipment use.
Some basic experience in conducting inventories, data entry, data maintenance, and data extrapolation.
Able to assist in delivering program information and research results at outreach events such as conferences, classes, meetings, tours, workshops, plant sales, and public and private events; through presentations, talks, demonstrations and written material.
Able to lift and carry 40 lbs of laboratory equipment/supplies, independently and/or with assistance or broken down into smaller weight loads.
Desirable Qualifications
At least one (1) year of plant tissue culture and/or cryopreservation experience, especially for the conservation of threatened and endangered plant taxa; or equivalent education/training or experience.
Some knowledge of chemicals required for plant growth (how they are incorporated into a plant tissue culture media) and chemicals required for plant cryopreservation.
Some understanding of plant disease and growth defects relating to tissue culture and how to identify/mitigate them.
Demonstrated ability to research and implement new strategies for micropropagation and cryopreservation.
Knowledge and understanding of Federal and State endangered species laws and guidelines.
