Conflicts Attorney – Venable LLP
We’re looking for a
Conflicts Attorney
to facilitate the conflicts resolution process for new business and provide legal analysis of potential conflicts of interest to the Ethics Committee Chairperson.
Responsibilities
Analyze conflicts for new clients, matters, and lateral hires using internal systems and external databases (e.g., Lexis, D&B, Hoovers).
Recommend conflict resolutions and coordinate with attorneys and clients on waivers and disclosures.
Draft and review conflicts waivers and engagement letters in line with applicable ethical rules.
Approve new matters following clearance; ensure conflict issues are identified and resolved efficiently.
Review RFPs, FOIA responses, and deposition bookings for conflicts and ethical compliance.
Review and resolve conflicts for lateral candidates; draft consent letters and coordinate with impacted attorneys.
Document findings and escalate unresolved issues to firm leadership as needed.
Review Outside Counsel Guidelines (OCGs) for conflict-related provisions; advise on necessary updates to internal data.
Address and troubleshoot OCG-related conflicts and ensure accuracy of affiliate and subsidiary information.
Recommend and manage implementation and updates of ethical screens.
Stay current on legal ethics regulations and update firm processes and databases accordingly.
Provide training to legal staff on ethics and conflict procedures.
Monitor legal industry developments and firm dockets for potential conflicts or risk exposures.
Qualifications
A Juris Doctor degree and active bar membership in the state where working; must maintain active credit status for CLE or MCLE.
A minimum of three years of law practice experience.
Thorough knowledge of federal, state and municipal government structures and advise Ethics Committee on conflict issues related to government entities.
In-depth understanding of conflicts of interest and the Rules of Professional Conduct.
Ability to research, analyze, summarize and recommend conflict resolutions of actual and potential conflicts of interest.
Strong negotiation skills and ability to make persuasive arguments at all levels; strong time management skills.
High level of attention to detail in researching and analyzing potential conflicts.
Discretion and independent judgment; aptitude for effective and creative problem‑solving.
Interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations with poise, tact and diplomacy.
Availability for on‑call rotation and ability to respond after‑hours conflicts checks.
Pay Range Baltimore, MD: $120,000 – $150,000 per year
Washington, DC: $125,000 – $160,000 per year
