OPHTHALMIC TECH II
Location: Stanford Health Care, Byers Eye Institute, Livermore, CA.
The Ophthalmic Technician II provides technical ophthalmic and administrative assistance for the Byers Eye Institute multi‑specialty group practice. The role involves obtaining medical histories from patients, performing ocular and visual examinations, assisting with minor procedures, and managing administrative duties such as appointment scheduling, billing, and patient follow‑up. The incumbent also acts as a liaison among patients and providers, ensuring timely resolution of inquiries and concerns.
What You Will Do
Supervision & Coordination: Daily interactions with assisting technical/patient care managers and doctors; periodic meetings with clinic manager. Expected to work with minimal supervision.
Clinical Duties: Accurately document patient’s ocular and medical history; perform visual acuity, autorefractometry, lensometry, tonometry, topography, visual fields, ocular motility testing, biometry, and optical coherence tomography. Conduct ophthalmic electrophysiology tests (ERG, EOG, VEP, GVF, color vision). Write preliminary reports and maintain proficiency.
Procedural Support: Administer eye drops for pupil dilation and topical anesthesia under provider supervision; assist physicians during minor surgical procedures such as intravitreal injections and laser treatments.
Medication Management: Process patient requests for medication refills; contact pharmacies; determine need for physician review. Educate patients on medication usage.
Equipment & Supplies: Maintain examination room equipment and supplies; clean/disinfect instruments; ensure instruments are sterilized. Prepare necessary supplies for diagnostic testing, exams, and procedures.
Patient Care & Liaison: Serve as liaison between medical staff and patients; coordinate patient care and provide education. Report patient concerns and adverse reactions to appropriate clinic personnel.
Administrative Duties: Triaging patient issues; responding to requests by doctors and staff; follow‑up calls; file preparation; insurance verifications; maintain clinic flow; coordinate service requests with vendors and IT support; assist in educational and safety programs.
Records & Confidentiality: Maintain patient confidentiality; document all necessary information in the appropriate system(s). Perform tasks safely and in compliance with policies.
Additional Tasks: Perform other duties or projects as assigned.
Education Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Associate Degree – combined experience/education can substitute for minimum education.
Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) upon hire; renewal required before expiration.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Minimum one year experience as an ophthalmic technician in a high‑volume setting.
Knowledge of ophthalmic medical terminology, anatomy, and the visual system.
Skill in acquiring accurate medical history, visual acuity, and tonometry.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word & Excel; typing speed and accuracy.
Strong written communication, editing, and proofreading skills.
Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills; able to work independently with minimal supervision.
Ability to prioritize varying tasks and analyze clinical and administrative information.
Compassionate, caring personality with the ability to calm distressed patients.
Knowledge of maintenance of patient‑related testing equipment and ophthalmic protocols.
Adaptability to dynamic clinical needs; strong organizational and follow‑up skills.
Ability to multitask effectively.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Experience in a university‑based medical facility or academic teaching environment.
