Distinguished Control Engineer – Algorithm Development (Medical Devices)
Location: Irvine, California
Employment type: Full Time
Department: R&D / Algorithm Engineering
Reports To: Feras Hatib, VP R&D-Algorithms
We are seeking a Distinguished Control Engineer to lead the design and development of advanced control algorithms for life‑saving and life‑enhancing medical technologies. This senior‑level role in our R&D Algorithm Development team is critical to shaping the future of intelligent, closed‑loop medical systems.
The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in control theory, signal processing, physiological systems, and algorithm development, driving innovations that improve patient outcomes through precision, automation, and real‑time responsiveness.
Key Responsibilities
Apply control engineering, signal processing, and human physiology expertise to develop algorithms for critical care monitoring and automated drug delivery systems.
Design and implement closed‑loop, adaptive, and model predictive control algorithms for medical devices.
Develop and validate simulation models (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink) to optimize control strategies.
Analyze physiological signals and sensor data to inform algorithm design.
Lead research, conduct animal studies, and participate in clinical data collection and analysis.
Execute verification and validation testing in compliance with FDA and ISO standards.
Support regulatory submissions by documenting algorithm architecture, performance, and safety.
Provide technical mentorship to engineers on advanced technologies and control systems development.
Qualifications
PhD in Engineering or Scientific field with 8+ years of relevant experience, or
Master’s degree with 11+ years of experience, or
Bachelor’s degree with 12+ years of experience.
PhD highly preferred.
Key Requirements
Recognized expert in Control Engineering, with deep understanding of system dynamics, signal processing, and system identification.
Proven track record in algorithm development, optimization, and validation for control systems.
Experience working with real‑time systems, sensor integration, and embedded software.
Proficient in MATLAB/Simulink and C/C++ for real‑time embedded systems.
Strong understanding of human physiology, especially cardiovascular hemodynamics and vital sign monitoring.
Experience with pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic modeling.
Direct experience designing physiologic closed‑loop medical devices (e.g., ventilators, insulin pumps, anesthesia systems).
Familiarity with FDA design controls, IEC 62304, and software lifecycle processes.
Knowledge of machine learning/AI techniques applied to control systems is a plus.
Excellent collaboration, communication, and team leadership skills.
