Full-Time General Description
The North Carolina Collection (NCC) is the special collections unit of the Durham County Library and is housed in the Main Library. Work is performed independently under the supervision of the Head of the North Carolina Collection. Must be able to work an evening and weekend rotation. Duties and Responsibilities
In consultation with the Head of the NCC, the management of the department’s digital archives and preservation program. This includes overseeing the department’s digitization activities and the management of assets and metadata using the NCC’s digital repository, Quartex Processing born-digital archival collections, managing the department’s oral history collections, and consulting on systems and software used by the department Staffing the NCC reference desk and providing research assistance to in-person and remote customers Processing analog archival collections using ArchivesSpace Assisting in developing and improving overall workflows and procedures for the NCC. Assisting in the planning and execution of NCC programming and outreach efforts throughout the year Assisting in overseeing the work of volunteers and students Attending programs, trainings, and workshops that further job-related knowledge and skills Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Advanced knowledge of digital archives and preservation best practices Knowledge of professional analog archival principles, procedures, materials, and practices Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and library patrons Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing Ability to understand and interpret library rules, policies and procedures Knowledge of local Durham and North Carolina history Commitment to excellence in customer service Education and Experience Requirement
Requires a master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited library school. Preferred Qualifications
Concentration in archives or special collections Experience working with oral history collections Experience creating physical and digital exhibits Experience migrating collection assets and records between different systems or technologies Experience managing physical collection moves and stacks management Experience training and supervising volunteers and student workers Americans with Disabilities Act Compliance
