Staff Psychologist – VA
Location: Dayton, OH
Salary Range: $79,964.00 – $148,165.00 per year (Base Pay)
Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program.
Applicants must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment.
Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VA Education Loan Repayment Services after a complete review of the EDRP application.
Qualifications
United States citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
Doctoral degree in psychology from a program accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) or equivalent Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) or Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS) at the time the program was completed.
Specialty area must match the assignment for which the applicant is employed.
Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia.
Non‑licensed applicants may receive a temporary appointment as a "graduate psychologist" under 38 U.S.C. § 605(b)(2)(B) for up to two years.
Graduate psychologists who fail to obtain licensure during the temporary period will be terminated.
Grade determination for Staff Psychologist: GS‑11 (Entry Level) with no experience beyond basic requirements; GS‑12 (Developmental Level) with at least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS‑11).
Full performance level GS‑13 requires at least 2 years of experience equivalent to GS‑12.
Professional competence in applying a wide range of psychological treatments, assessment methods, and research activities as described in the job duties.
Basic Requirements
Hold a doctoral degree in a recognized specialty area (clinical, counseling, school, or psychological clinical science) and meet licensure requirements.
Re‑specialization or pre‑doctoral internship experiences must satisfy VA’s accredited internship criteria, including APA or CPA accreditation at the time of completion and consistent with the assignment.
Possess, or be eligible to obtain, a license to practice in the applicable jurisdiction.
Maintain board certification if applying as a graduate psychologist.
Demonstrate knowledge, skill, and ability in all areas of clinical practice relevant to the assignment.
Stay current with professional standards and engage in continuing education as required.
Duties
Provide direct clinical care management to an assigned cohort of patients.
Deliver a full range of psychological services, including psychotherapy, assessment, evaluation, and specialized techniques consistent with the assignment.
Maintain productivity standards and timely service initiation (within two workdays of consultation request).
Supervise and collaborate with peers to maintain quality casework and documentation.
Support program planning, outcome evaluation, and research activities.
Participate in program‑wide outcome evaluation studies and support quality assurance processes.
Compensation and Benefits
Work Schedule: Monday‑Friday 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.
Competitive base salary with regular increases; higher step rates may apply for exceptional qualifications.
Paid Time Off: 37–50 days annually, including 13 days of sick leave and 11 federal holidays.
Parental Leave: Up to 12 weeks paid after 12 months of employment.
Childcare subsidy: Eligible employees with a total family income below $144,000 may receive up to 25% of eligible childcare costs.
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and 401(k) with up to 5% employer match.
