Reporting to the Program Director, the Hyperbaric License Practical Nurse administers hyperbaric oxygen therapy as prescribed by the Hyperbaric Provider. The position is responsible for the safe and effective operation of the hyperbaric chamber(s) and related support systems, day‑to‑day maintenance, and the safe delivery of hyperbaric oxygen therapy to patients.
Essential Functions / Responsibilities
Performs hyperbaric chamber operator duties, including:
Preparing, educating, and orienting patients about Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy; lifting or transferring patients per local policy, preparing for treatment, and answering questions.
Administering hyperbaric oxygen therapy as prescribed; monitoring chamber performance and patient responses, making adjustments to ensure safety and effectiveness.
Recording data for daily treatments and wound care clinic visits, keeping accurate patient records.
Operating and maintaining the hyperbaric chamber(s) and support oxygen systems.
Participating in the safety program, including conducting safety drills.
Responsible for all hyperbaric equipment/supply, ensuring safe operation and maintenance:
Evaluating equipment and supply for safety compliance before permitting them inside the chamber(s).
Restricting or removing potentially hazardous items.
Collaborating with the Program Director and Healogics to coordinate approvals for chamber upgrades, modifications, and repairs in compliance with safety standards.
Works closely with facility management, department medical personnel, and senior management to develop and update policies, procedures, and maintenance documents.
Leads hyperbaric safety program activities, including:
Maintaining a safe environment using approved decompression procedures.
Reviewing safety incidents, collecting data, and providing in‑service training.
Conducting quarterly safety drills and informing staff of special work conditions.
Assisting the Medical Director in reviewing safety events and facilitating learning.
Ensuring compliance with NFPA 99 and reviewing safety policies.
Serving on the hospital’s safety or environment of care committee as appropriate.
If CMA or LPN, may function as a Documentation Assistant (scribe) per company policy.
Performs other duties as required.
Required Education, Experience and Credentials
High School Diploma or GED.
Current Certified Hyperbaric Technologist (CHT) or Certified Hyperbaric Specialist (CHS) certification preferred.
Pre‑ or post‑hire completion of an approved Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) Safety course within 5 years.
Pre‑ or post‑hire completion of an approved hyperbaric Medicine Introductory course (e.g., Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society, NBDHMT, DOD, ASC).
Current healthcare professional certification or license applicable in state of practice, maintained throughout employment. Valid credentials include:
Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
Military Corpsman or Medical Services Specialist
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic
Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)
Certified Hyperbaric Specialist (CHS)
Certified Hyperbaric Registered Nurse (CHRN)
Certified or Registered Medical Assistant (CMA/RMA)
Certified Hyperbaric Technologist (CHT)
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA)
Certified Hyperbaric Wound Specialist (CHWS)
Physical Therapist (PT) or Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA)
DOD Hyperbaric Training (e.g., US Navy, Army or Coast Guard Diver levels, US Air Force Aerospace Physiology Specialist)
State Variations (Ohio)
Current Ohio license as RN, LPN/LVN, Respiratory Therapist, or CHT per NBDHMT approval.
Pre‑ or post‑hire completion of an introductory hyperbaric training course per NBDHMT, DOD, ASC, or UHS.
Two or more years of healthcare experience preferred.
Prior wound or critical care experience preferred.
Prior supervisory experience preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) / CPR certification, maintained during employment.
Hyperbaric equipment and systems troubleshooting skills.
Attention to detail, multi‑tasking, time‑management, and organizational skills.
Strong interpersonal, oral, written communication, and customer service skills.
Basic math proficiency and ability to stay calm and soothe patients.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
Physical Demands
Stationary position for extended periods (4+ hours).
Extended computer use (4+ hours).
Moving about, lifting/moving up to 75 pounds with assistance, pushing/pulling, bending/stooping.
Communicating, vision, reaching/grasping, sound detection.
Work Environment
Primarily indoors, patient care setting.
Exposure to hazards such as blood‑borne pathogens, toxic chemicals, flammable/explosive gases.
Exposure to mechanical equipment and electrical current.
The hourly rate for this position generally ranges between $23.49 and $29.63, depending on qualifications, experience, and location.
