The Perinatal Educator is responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs for nursing staff in Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, and Level 2 Nursery. This role ensures that clinical practice aligns with AWHONN standards, evidence-based guidelines, and regulatory requirements to promote safe, high-quality, and family-centered care. Job Description: Essential Duties & Responsibilities :
Education & Training
Develop and deliver orientation, continuing education, and competency-based training for perinatal nurses.
Utilize AWHONN’s Perinatal Orientation and Education Program (POEP) and other evidence-based curricula.
Facilitate simulation-based learning and skills labs for obstetric and neonatal emergencies.
Provide education on perinatal safety bundles, maternal early warning signs, and neonatal resuscitation.
Clinical Practice Support
Serve as a clinical resource and mentor to nursing staff across L&D, Postpartum, and Level 2 Nursery.
Collaborate with unit leaders to assess staff learning needs and develop individualized learning plans.
Support implementation of new policies, procedures, and technologies.
Quality & Compliance
Ensure educational content aligns with AWHONN staffing standards, nurse-patient ratios, and acuity-based care models
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and data analysis related to perinatal outcomes.
Maintain documentation of staff competencies and regulatory compliance.
Collaboration & Leadership
Partner with interdisciplinary teams including physicians, midwives, lactation consultants, and NICU staff.
Lead or participate in perinatal safety and practice councils.
Represent the department in hospital-wide education and quality forums.
Qualifications:
Education
Bachelor's degree in nursingrequired;
Master's degree in nursing or education preferred.
Licensure/Certification
Current RN license in the state of practice.
BLS, ACLS, NRP, and AWHONN Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring certification required.
Certification in Inpatient Obstetric Nursing (RNC-OB) or Neonatal Nursing (RNC-NIC) preferred.
Experience:
Minimum 3–5 years of recent clinical experience in L&D, Postpartum, or Level 2 Nursery.
Prior experience in staff education or clinical instruction strongly preferred.
Skills:
Strong knowledge of AWHONN standards and perinatal best practices.
Excellent communication, presentation, and leadership skills.
Proficiency in electronic health records and learning management systems.
Additional Information
Physical Nature of the Job:
Hospital-based setting with frequent presence on clinical units. Work Hours:
Occasional evening or weekend hours for staff education coverage. Vaccination Requirement:
