POSITION SUMMARY Under the general supervision of a Common Pleas Judge, hears and decides cases referred pursuant to Civil Rule 53 (domestic relations), Civil Rule 65.1 (special statutory proceedings involving civil protection orders) and Criminal Rule 19 (adult arraignments and other criminal cases).

QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a Juris Doctor degree and admission to the Ohio bar in good standing.

The applicant must have at least 5 years of law practice experience.

Must possess excellent analytical, interpersonal, communication, oral and writing skills.

Must be familiar with trial procedure and skilled in facilitating settlement.

Must pass a pre-employment background investigation and drug test.

DUTIES

Manages an assigned docket, including setting hearings on motions for temporary orders, and setting pre‑trials, trials and post‑judgment motions.

Decides requests for temporary support and other temporary orders under Civ. R. 75(N) or on a party’s motion after hearing.

Issues orders regulating the proceedings in referred cases, including orders related to discovery, temporary injunctive relief and other temporary relief, continuances, and pretrial proceedings to ensure timely disposition of cases.

Conducts pre‑trials.

Appoints guardians ad litem and other experts related to parenting issues and conducts in‑camera interview of minor children.

Supervises and directs the work of the Administrative Assistant/Court Reporter assigned to the Magistrate.

Presides over contested trials and decides the merits of cases, hearing and evaluating evidence and witness credibility, analyzing laws and rules, making findings of fact and conclusions of law, and issuing written and oral decisions under Civ. R. 53.

Presides over uncontested divorce cases and actions for dissolution of marriage.

Hears and decides all post‑judgment proceedings, including motions to show cause and other requests for enforcement of judgments and motions for modification or prior support, custody, and visitation orders.

Conducts all proceedings in civil protection order cases pursuant to Civ. R. 65.1, including issuing protection orders after ex parte and full hearings.

Conducts criminal arraignments and presides over other criminal matters as may be referred by the Judge.

Provides support to Judge in General Division as may be assigned.

Stays current on new or amended statutes, rules, procedures, and case law.

Conducts legal research, and analyzes legal decisions, cases, and documents.

Maintains record of court proceedings by digital audio/video recording or court reporter transcript.

Marks and keeps track of exhibits.

Provides recommendations to Judge regarding the need for updates and modification of Local Court Rules.

Convenes local bar association DR committee to discuss latest trends in the DR practice for potential implementation in court practices and procedures.

Coordinates and manages a contract with CSEA for services for child support under the federal government IV‑D program and submits a monthly report to CSEA.

Attends training and educational seminars, and pursues other professional development opportunities such as, sitting on local and statewide DR committees.

Maintains sensitive and confidential court information, exhibits, and details.

Effective time management, reliability and punctuality.

Explores DR technology, practices and methods for potential implementation in our Domestic Relations court.
