JOB POSTING – Director of Finance

Position Description The Director of Finance will oversee all accounting functions for CHIRLA’s 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations. Responsibilities include planning, budgeting, directing ledger accounts, financial statements, cost control systems, and ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. The Director reports directly to the Managing Director and collaborates closely with senior leadership.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Assist in developing and implementing accounting strategies, policies, and procedures aligned with organizational goals.

Collaborate with senior management to establish financial objectives and ensure compliance with evolving regulations.

Supervise financial control systems, including general ledger, budgeting, and cost allocation.

Oversee preparation and submission of internal and external financial reports, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.

Coordinate tax filings and work with external accountants to maintain compliance with federal, state, and payroll tax regulations.

Lead the annual audit process and ensure adherence to GAAP and government regulations.

Prepare and oversee operational budgets, monitor funding sources and expenses.

Collate finance grant information and assist with grant writing and reporting.

Conduct financial analyses to support cash‑flow management, investment strategies, and debt management.

Oversee banking relationships and other financial relationships.

Supervise, train, and develop the finance and accounting team; provide leadership, training, and performance feedback.

Recruit, onboard, and train new team members in collaboration with HR.

Ensure effective communication of accounting policies, procedures, and changes across the organization.

Review and direct monthly closing of the books and perform detailed analysis.

Coordinate accounting information systems, implement updates, and optimize processes.

Maintain compliance with financial regulations for 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) non‑profits.

Collaborate with program and development staff to prepare financial reports for grants and ensure compliance.

Serve as a liaison to external auditors, regulators, and financial institutions.

Maintain positive relationships with funders, vendors, and other stakeholders.

Skills and Qualifications Required

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or business administration.

At least five years’ experience in nonprofit finance with significant grant reporting and cash‑flow/structural turnaround experience.

At least three years’ supervisory experience.

Self‑starter with initiative in communicating improvements.

In‑depth knowledge of financial practices, regulations, and reporting requirements.

Proficiency with accounting systems and related technologies (e.g., Sage Intacct, Nexonia, Salesforce).

Experience in supervising, managing, and mentoring staff.

Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to prioritize tasks and work in a rapidly changing environment while meeting key deadlines.

Attention to detail and accuracy; strong problem‑solving skills.

Ability to work efficiently and manage multiple projects simultaneously; professionalism and teamwork.

Preferred

CPA Certification.

Project, team, or organizational management experience.

Understanding of fundraising through foundations and individual donors.

Job Title Director of Finance

Salary & Benefits Annual base salary: $124,387 – $134,537. CHIRLA offers an excellent benefits package, including annual paid vacation; additional paid holiday leave in December; employer contribution to a retirement account; health, dental, vision, and life insurance plans.

Classification Exempt/Salary; full‑time; regular. The position is not covered under the collective bargaining agreement.

Reports To Managing Director
