Principal Power System Electrical Engineer
Join Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) to help power Microsoft’s expanding cloud infrastructure and support the Intelligent Cloud mission. SCHIE delivers core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft’s global online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Teams, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform.
Responsibilities
Define and design rack-level power systems for integration of diverse IT gear in Microsoft data centers
Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to drive product qualification, full test coverage, and deployment
Contribute to the rack‑level power system roadmap with vendor partners ensuring long‑term scalability
Lead system stability analysis using impedance‑based methods and advanced modeling techniques
Drive simulation and modeling for system transient and steady‑state analysis
Collaborate on power delivery for high‑performance compute, AI workloads, and ODM platforms
Define and enforce power system design standards, safety protocols, and regulatory compliance
Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership across the organization
Engage external partners, suppliers, and academic collaborators to advance power system innovation
Qualifications
Doctorate in Electrical, Computer, or related engineering AND 3+ years technical engineering experience
MASTER’S: 6+ years experience OR Bachelor’s: 8+ years experience OR equivalent
5+ years experience with front‑end single‑phase or 3‑phase PFC design
5+ years experience with isolated high‑voltage to low‑voltage DC‑DC conversion
2+ years in power system stability analysis and simulation
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of electromagnetic field theory, simulation, EMC, grounding, and thermal management
Experience in rack power or data center environments
Product bring‑up, troubleshooting, and power supply testing expertise
Design specifications, guidelines, and test plan development
Proficiency with Matlab/Simulink, Ansys Maxwell, PLECS, Python, Cadence, Mathcad, LTSpice, Simetrix/Simplis, PSCAD
Digital bus design (I2C/PMBus, Modbus, CANbus)
Familiarity with safety standards, qualification processes, MTBF, EMF, and EMC
Excellent communication and leadership skills
Data center power delivery and compute board DC power system experience are pluses
Other Requirements
Must meet Microsoft, customer or government security screening requirements, including the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire and biennially thereafter
Base Pay Range USD $139,900 – $274,800 per year, varying by location (San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area: USD $188,000 – $304,200). Eligible for benefits and additional compensation.
