Physician – Nephrologist – U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP).

Applicants must meet the specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment.

EDRP award amounts are up to $200,000 and can be awarded for one to five years.

Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement.

Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Current physician(s) in VA who met the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.

The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Residency training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

(NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Proven residencies include those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or other residencies followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.

Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as “Physician Resident Providers” (PRPs).

PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis.

PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged, rather they have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.

Additional – surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.

Physical Requirements: The Physical Requirements of this position are concerned with the mental and physical ability of the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment and may include requisite laboratory and other screening as required by Federal regulatory agencies.

Duties

The VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System is recruiting for a Physician – Nephrologist.

The Physician – Nephrologist will work in the Nephrology department within Medicine Service.

The incumbent will provide patient care (outpatient and inpatient) for chronic and end‑stage kidney disease, glomerulonephritis, fluid–electrolyte, and acid–base disorders.

As an academic nephrologist the incumbent will actively participate in the education and research mission of the VA.

Candidate must be board eligible or board certified in Nephrology; transplant nephrology training experience preferred.

LSCVAMC is affiliated with Case Western Reserve University; the applicant will be eligible for faculty appointment at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Work schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 am–4:30 pm.

Pay Base pay range: $200,000.00 per year – $400,000.00 per year.

Additional incentives include annual performance bonus and regular salary increases.
