Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or District of Columbia
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
Approved residencies are: (1) ACGME, (2) AOA, or (3) other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs)
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e. not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis
PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they are to have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
Proficiency in spoken and written English
Additional requirement: completed an accredited internship in Epilepsy or Neurophysiology
Applicant must be Board Certified or Board Eligible in Neurology
Preferred: Completed ACGME fellowship in Epilepsy or Neurophysiology
Physical Requirements: Evaluation of physical‑cognitive and emotional fitness required prior to appointment
This is a designated drug testing position; random testing for illegal drug use will be required after appointment
Candidates must be capable of interactions with patients and health care personnel in a caring and professional manner
Must tolerate physically taxing workloads and adapt to changing environments
Duties
The VA Boston Healthcare System (VABHS) is a designated VA Epilepsy Center of Excellence and is seeking a full‑time Epileptologist as part of their multidisciplinary Epilepsy and Neurology Department
The VABHS Epilepsy program supports a 5‑bed epilepsy monitoring unit, ICU EEG monitoring, outpatient and inpatient EEG, intraoperative monitoring and multidisciplinary Epilepsy and PNES clinics
Call both for EEG and inpatient neurology coverage supervising in‑house residents; duty stations include JPVA (Office–Clinic) and WRVA (Epilepsy Monitoring Unit–Inpatient service)
Clinic hours: Monday–Friday 8 AM–4:30 PM
The VA Boston Epilepsy Program supports combined ACGME Epilepsy and Neurophysiology Fellowship Programs with Brigham and Women’s Hospital
Essential duties: (1) provide medical care to adult patients with seizure disorders; (2) interpret EEG‑Video‑EEG and Tele‑EEG studies; (3) teach/supervise residents, clinical fellows, and medical students; (4) support the Neurology service as an attending in general neurology clinics and inpatient service coverage
Department maintains active academic and teaching affiliations with Harvard Medical School, Boston University School of Medicine, and the Mass General Brigham Neurology Residency Training Program
Selected candidate will be nominated for a faculty position at Harvard Medical School or Boston University School of Medicine commensurate with qualifications
VABHS is the largest tertiary care center for veterans in New England providing a full spectrum of inpatient, residential, and outpatient medical‑surgical and mental health services across three major campuses
Hosts VA Biorepository Brain Bank and the VA Million Veteran Program
Research is one of the largest VA Research services with the highest VERA dollars funding nationally
VHA Physician Total Rewards, recruitment incentive (sign‑on bonus), education debt reduction program (EDRP)
Eligible for EDRP up to $200,000; must apply within four months of start date
Relief: free liability protection with tail coverage provided
Work schedule: Full‑time; schedule to be determined with supervisor
Benefits and Compensation Pay: Competitive salary – annual performance bonus – regular salary increases. Paid time off: 50‑55 days per year. Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% contributions by VA. Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long‑term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement). Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any U.S. State or territory. CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full‑time with board certification).
