Base Pay Range:
$250,000 – $295,000 per year.
Summary:
The Psychiatrist is assigned to the Lubbock VA Clinic Mental Health/Behavioral Health Service full-time; the position may also be performed remotely from any location in the United States. Responsibilities include general outpatient psychiatric treatment for a wide range of mental health diagnoses, including diagnostic evaluation, medication management, and monitoring therapeutic response.
Qualifications Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens are unavailable per VA policy.
Language: Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Education: Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine from a VA-approved school.
License/Registration: Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
Residency Training: Completion of an accredited core specialty residency program approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, leading to eligibility for board certification.
PRP Status: Residents in approved training programs who meet basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) on an intermittent or fee basis.
Duties
Evaluate, diagnose, treat, and consult on adults presenting with mental, behavioral, addictive, or emotional disorders, including psychoses, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, adjustment disorders, and behavior modification.
Perform history and physical examinations; order diagnostic laboratory tests; prescribe medications; provide psychotherapy, family therapy, and crisis interventions.
Consult with other physicians regarding psychiatric disorders and pharmacotherapy.
Participate in recruitment/relocation incentives, sign‑on bonuses, and the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) if eligible.
Benefits & Compensation The position offers competitive salary, annual performance bonus, and regular salary increases. Paid time off includes 50‑55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 federal holidays, and up to 5 days paid CME absence). Retirement benefits comprise a traditional federal pension with 5‑year vesting and a federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution. Health insurance includes federal health, vision, dental, life, long‑term care, and disability coverage.
Licensure: One full, unrestricted U.S. state or territory medical license. CME: Potential $1,000 per year reimbursement for full‑time physicians with board certification. Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage. Contract: No employee contract or significant moonlighting restrictions. Work schedule: Typically Monday‑Friday 08:00‑16:30 Central Standard Time.
