Overview

The Executive Director of the organization runs the daily operations and designs, develops and implements plans to execute the organization’s mission. Directs the daily operations of both the shelter and clinic while ensuring the strategic growth of both. Conducts the onboarding, supervision, development, and ongoing evaluation of all staff of the organization. The Executive Director shall be the administrative agent of the Board of Directors. The Executive Director will be expected to uphold the stated mission of Animal Outreach and its strategic plan, promote its goals, advise the Board of Directors on making decisions in the best interest of the organization. The role is Accountable to the Board of Directors. Key Responsibilities

Leadership, Management, and Operations

Uphold the organization’s mission and promote our goals with individuals and organizations. Recruit, develop, and evaluate staff & volunteers while fostering a healthy workplace culture that promotes high retention. Ensure compliance with nonprofit regulations, labor laws, local ordinances, and other contracts. Maintain or exceed animal shelter, clinic, and animal welfare standards. Serve as a leader for capital campaigns needed to continue or expand the organization's services and/or capacity. Ensure the facility is sufficient and lead efforts needed to modify, renovate or relocate the organization to fulfill the mission. Ensure the organization is compliant with any lease agreements and has sufficient length of term remaining to ensure ongoing operations are not impacted. Serve as a dynamic liaison between the Board of Directors, shelter staff/volunteers, the community-at-large, our customers, and the animals we help. Establish a positive working relationship with the Board and create clearly defined boundaries for the ED’s responsibility over financial goals. Provide regular reports as required by the Board President (e.g., shelter statistics, progress on goals, announcements). Assess the organization structure and suggest changes to enhance the organization. Finances and Fundraising

Create and manage an annual financial budget for both capital and operational expenses, with a semi-annual rolling forecast of revenue and expenses. Manage daily finances and monthly reporting, coordinating with the board treasurer and bookkeeping department to provide reports to the Board of Directors. Dedicate a significant portion of time to fundraising, including finalizing and managing a diverse fundraising plan with tiered individual and corporate donations and annual events. Make funding and grant applications that align with the organization's mission. Ensure that any restrictions on funds are identified and accounted for per organizational policies. Public Engagement

Actively build, coordinate, and evaluate strategic partnerships with governmental Animal Control agencies, elected officials, local veterinarians, other animal shelters, and pet supply stores. Help create a plan to coordinate an effective marketing and communication strategy that includes social media posts, newsletters, and press releases. Board and Organizational Goals

Create and implement future strategic plans with Board guidance. Attend all open and closed Board meetings and present comprehensive updates on the shelter and clinic, as well as other key organizational developments, and bring major issues or questions before the board or committee for consideration and guidance. Help the Board support the organization’s fundraising goals and any related staff and volunteer duties. Qualifications

Education & Experience Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in nonprofit management, business, public administration, or related field preferred Minimum 5–7 years of progressive leadership experience in nonprofit management, preferably in animal welfare, healthcare, or community services. Demonstrated success in fundraising and donor relations, including major gifts, grants, corporate sponsorships, and capital campaigns. Strong track record in financial management, budgeting, and reporting for organizations with budgets of $1M+. Experience overseeing staff and volunteers, including performance management, team building, and HR compliance. Knowledge of animal welfare, shelter operations, or veterinary services is highly desirable. Skills & Competencies Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills; ability to engage effectively with donors, board members, staff, volunteers, media, and community partners. Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to balance immediate operational needs with long-term strategic goals. Proven ability to build relationships, partnerships, and collaborations with diverse stakeholders. Commitment to equity, inclusion, and compassionate care for animals and people. Flexibility, resilience, and problem-solving ability in a fast-paced, evolving nonprofit environment.
