Overview
IMEG , one of the largest design consulting firms in the U.S., seeks a
Structural Project Designer
in either our Chicago or Naperville, IL office. As a Structural Project Designer, you will lead design efforts as a project manager or lead engineer for low to moderate complexity projects and collaborate with senior staff for the delivery of larger and high complexity projects. You will work closely with a team of engineers and consultants to provide engineering solutions and advice to clients to ensure positive outcomes. Primary responsibilities include engineering analysis, design, and implementation oversight of mechanical systems for the vertical building industry. This position will work within the project's monetary budget, train, mentor, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet project goals and client expectations. Principal Responsibilities
Lead efforts for the analysis and design of structural systems using a variety of building materials; utilize engineering software and tools to create detailed designs, specifications, and calculations according to code requirements and IMEG standards.
Interact with clients to understand their needs, gather project requirements, and communicate technical information effectively; build and maintain client relationships through professional communication.
Work as part of a project team to support the execution of consulting projects. Lead efforts in project planning, budgeting, and scheduling tasks to meet project deadlines and objectives; document design decisions and instructions from clients while monitoring project design progress as related to percent complete and fee expended.
Analyze engineering problems and propose innovative solutions; collaborate with senior engineers and consultants to develop practical and efficient solutions.
Provide in-process design reviews of structural system design, calculations, and specifications; implement IMEG quality control processes to ensure that engineering designs and solutions meet IMEG quality standards, industry standards and client requirements.
Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in structural engineering; contribute to research, development, and innovation efforts within IMEG.
Prioritize safety in all aspects of engineering work.
Conduct oneself in an ethical and professional manner.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including other engineers, architects, and project managers, to deliver integrated solutions that meet project goals.
Identify potential project problems and seek advice from the Project Manager.
Oversee projects through bidding, design, and construction administration phases.
Required Skills/Abilities
Proficiency in design techniques, tools, and concepts involved in the production of technical plans and specifications.
Strong technical and analytical skills including principles in mechanics and materials, load paths, design techniques, design standards (steel, concrete, wood, masonry) and concepts involved in structural systems of buildings and structures.
Ability to train and mentor less experienced staff.
Proficiency in industry-standard engineering software and tools including structural design and analysis software.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate clearly in both oral and written form.
Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
Eagerness to adapt to new challenges.
Proficiency in the use of BIM software.
Proficient with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Ability to travel up to 10% with occasional overnight stays.
Education and Experience
Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Civil, Structural, or Architectural Engineering, or equivalent, required.
Master's Degree (MS) in Structural Engineering preferred.
Engineering In Training (EIT) Certification preferred.
3 years of experience minimum required, 4 preferred, in the building design consulting industry.
OR Associates degree, or certificate, in Building Information Modeling (BIM) or Engineering preferred.
7 years of experience minimum required, 8 preferred, in the building design consulting or construction industry.
