Boston Medical Center (BMC) is hiring a Respiratory Therapist RRT to deliver critical care respiratory services across all patient age groups in a physician‑supervised environment, following the American Association for Respiratory Care Clinical Practice Guidelines (AARC CPG). Position Function
The Respiratory Therapy Department has formally adopted the AARC CPG for patient care. Respiratory Therapists operate under physician supervision, adhere to department standards, and provide critical care services to patients of all ages. Job Relationships
Reports to the Technical Manager of Respiratory Therapy (or designee). Collaborates with other healthcare professionals to plan, provide, monitor, and evaluate respiratory care services for outpatients. Authority
Has authority to deliver all aspects of critical care respiratory therapy based on patient assessment and within hospital/department policies, procedures, and the AARC CPG. In the event of an untoward response to therapy, institutes appropriate emergency procedures, notifies the physician and nursing staff, and remains at the patient’s bedside until relieved. Responsibilities
Provides superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers, and patients in accordance with the Service Excellence Standards. Reviews medical records for physician orders, indications for therapy, and contraindications before administering therapies in compliance with the AARC CPG. Conducts comprehensive clinical patient assessments, including cardiac, pulmonary, and neurological status. Aggregates equipment, confirms function, monitors use, and implements corrective action in case of malfunction. Administers ordered therapy, monitors outcomes, hazards, and complications, and appropriately adjusts mechanical ventilators. Performs routine oxygen delivery, aerosol therapy, emergent airway management, chest physiotherapy, postural drainage, and sputum induction. Conducts regular assessments of ventilator systems per the AARC CPG and departmental standards. Documents patient assessments, therapies, monitoring data, responses, and complications in the medical record in accordance with the AARC CPG. Provides emergency response for cardiopulmonary arrest, respiratory emergencies, and hospital disasters, performing basic life support maneuvers. Maintains annual AHA BLS certification. Participates in multidisciplinary patient care plans and pulmonary rehabilitation for difficult‑to‑wean patients. Maintains departmental equipment, assists with inventory management, and logs equipment malfunctions. Calibrates and maintains pulmonary function equipment as per manufacturer’s recommendations and departmental standards. Assists with the performance of bronchoscopes, sleep studies, bronchial provocation, and exercise testing for evaluation of hypoxemia or desaturation. Reporting and Accountability
Reports patient status, therapies, goals, and responses shift to shift. Reports adverse reactions to pharmaceuticals or therapies and hospital variance reports. Maintains confidentiality and security of all hospital‑related data and information. Abides by all hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Accurately measures and calculates pulmonary parameters and demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of critical care respiratory therapy and the AARC CPG. Qualifications
Minimum experience: applicants with less than one year of respiratory therapy experience will be considered. Interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to explain respiratory therapy and pulmonary function testing procedures to patients. RRT license in respiratory therapy issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Certified in Basic Life Support by the AHA or Red Cross (required); Advanced Life Support certification preferred.
