Job Summary The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is a licensed registered nurse with advanced specialized training in the administration of anesthesia. The CRNA administers, monitors, and adjusts anesthetic doses to individual patients, from neonatal through geriatrics, during surgery and other procedures. Limited to select locations based on unique workplace dynamics.
Essential Functions
Interprets physician’s pre‑anesthetic evaluation and lab data.
Reviews health history, including psychosocial and biophysical information and current laboratory data.
Performs pre‑induction examination and inspects anatomical parts or organ systems related to the anesthetic plan; reviews proposed surgery with the patient.
Performs a brief physical assessment of the patient, dentures, prosthetic devices, allergies, and NPO status; verifies safety standards (machine checklist, suction equipment, airway management, electrode placement, positioning) before induction.
Induces and maintains general anesthesia at required safe levels, using techniques prescribed by the staff anesthesiologist or departmental guidelines.
Selects and administers anesthetic techniques, medications, and adjunctive drugs per departmental guidelines.
Performs intratracheal intubation and extubation, protecting the patient at all times.
Identifies and manages emergency situations per departmental policies and procedures.
Performs regional anesthesia using techniques prescribed by the staff anesthesiologist or departmental guidelines, and administers regional anesthetic techniques, medications, and adjunctive drugs per guidelines.
Monitors life‑support functions, records data, verifies equipment function; uses all available non‑invasive monitoring (BP, EKG, pulse oximetry, temperature, etc.) and documents per procedure.
Manages fluid, blood, and electrolyte loss and replacement per department policies.
Performs basic perioperative diagnosis testing and documentation to the anesthetic record, records events, and takes corrective action for adverse reactions.
Terminates anesthesia in a timely fashion, ensuring patient safety during post‑anesthetic recovery and transport to recovery room.
Provides detailed post‑anesthetic report to recovery personnel and documents post‑anesthetic visits in the Progress Note form.
Key Success Factors
Obtains 40 CEUs every two years.
Maintains certification and registration.
Stays informed of current trends and updated procedures.
Knows current cardiopulmonary resuscitation concepts.
Embraces change and communicates effectively with the anesthesia team.
Works variable hours, shares “on call” duties, and responds within acceptable time frames.

Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
Experience: Less than 1 year of experience.
