Overview Whatnot is the largest live shopping platform in North America and Europe. We blend community, shopping, and entertainment to create a marketplace for fashion, beauty, electronics, collectibles, and more. Our live auctions give everyone a place to buy, sell, and discover items they love.

Base Pay Range $180,000.00/yr – $260,000.00/yr

Role The Trust & Risk, Fraud & Integrity teams build systems to promote safe, trustworthy commerce. Combining proactive detection with transparent enforcement, we ensure Whatnot remains a safe place for buyers and sellers.

Responsibilities

Design and develop systems that protect the platform – iterate on production algorithms and infrastructure to mitigate systemic risks for buyers, sellers, and our community.

Balance risk and user experience – monitor the impact of protective systems on trusted users and deliver friction‑free interventions.

Respond in real‑time to threats – architect event‑driven pipelines and detection frameworks for near real‑time responses to high‑risk behavior.

Contribute across the full development lifecycle – from ideation through deployment and monitoring, delivering resilient and scalable solutions.

Drive cross‑team initiatives – collaborate across product surfaces and operational teams, surfacing insights via dashboards, notebooks, and clear documentation.

Continuously evolve defenses – iterate quickly and test solutions to stay ahead of emerging abuse patterns and account‑integrity risks.

Qualifications

7+ years total software engineering experience.

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Economics, or related field (or equivalent experience).

4+ years building for consumer‑scale workloads.

1+ year production Python experience.

1+ year experience in Trust & Risk, Integrity, or Fraud domains (preferred).

Data‑driven mindset and business intuition for scalable abuse prevention.

Explicit machine‑learning or data‑science experience is a big plus.

Obsession with impact – delivering simple, high‑value solutions quickly.

Relentless focus on quality while driving fast delivery.

Ability to work autonomously and lead cross‑functional initiatives.

Comfortable with data warehouses and transformation tools (Snowflake, dbt, Dagster).

Excellent documentation, communication, and remote‑work collaboration skills.

Compensation US‑based full‑time applicants receive $180,000 – $260,000 per year, plus benefits and equity.
