Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

United States Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.

Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine from a school approved by the VA for the year of completion.

Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.

Residency Training: Physicians must have completed an ACGME- or AOA-approved core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

Residents currently enrolled in accredited residency programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs).

PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis.

PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they have a scope of practice allowing certain restricted duties under supervision.

Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements in accordance with VA Directive and Handbook 5019.

Duties

Provide general dermatology consultation and services at the Syracuse VA Medical Center in alignment with clinical practice standards.

Supervise and educate residents and fellows in all clinical activities during their rotations.

Develop and actively participate in a tele‑dermatology program for the VISN‑2 Network.

Collaborate with physicians, physician extenders, nursing care providers, and ancillary staff as needed.

Provide expertise in multispecialty and patient‑care discussions.

As Chief physician of the dermatology section, participate in ongoing research, quality improvement, and teaching.

Provide inpatient and outpatient dermatology consultations and offer education to provider staff during regular tours of duty.

Perform dermatologic clinical procedures within the specialty as required.

Represent dermatology as an active member of the Department of Medicine.

Maintain board certification and continuing medical education.

Serve on peer review and other committees as requested by leadership.

Comply with Medical Staff bylaws and complete medical records timely through CPRS.

Engage in process improvements to promote quality, efficiency, patient safety, and timely access to care.

Participate in teaching of residents, fellows, and undergraduate medical students.

Conduct quarterly chart reviews and other quality assurance work.

Ensure timely record completion for all patients as outlined in Medical Staff bylaws.

Attend quarterly General Medical Staff meetings and monthly department staff meetings on duty.

Oversee care in the dermatology area, ensuring evidence‑based practices among staff.

Promote a cooperative and collegial environment.

Oversee care rendered by physician extenders within the area.

Potential supervisory position may be offered.
