Base pay range

$123,077.00/yr - $400,000.00/yr

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval – award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy

Education: Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine

Degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed; Approved schools are LCME accredited medical schools or AOA accredited osteopathic medical schools. For foreign medical graduates, the applicant must have a valid ECFMG certificate or the medical school must meet ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year graduated

Licensure and Registration: Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or District of Columbia

Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies include those accredited by ACGME or AOA or other qualifying programs as deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee

English Language Proficiency: Physicians appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d)

The anesthesiologist must have the full credentialing and qualifications required to serve in this role – including pre-operative exam and assessment; intra-operative care utilizing monitored anesthesia care; regional and general anesthesia techniques on American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) Class 1 through Class 5 patients; post-operative care

Duties

The major duties and responsibilities include: Evaluate, diagnose, treat, and provide consultation for patients of all ages in the perioperative or periprocedural period; serve as an expert in airway management, including specialized techniques such as fiberoptic bronchoscopy, video laryngoscopy, and one lung ventilation; document and review patients' histories; order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests; use specialized equipment including monitoring devices, laryngoscopes, bronchoscopes, ventilators, and ultrasounds; evaluate for and perform anesthetics – including monitored anesthesia care, general anesthesia, and/or regional anesthesia as appropriate; place invasive monitoring as appropriate; provide acute and chronic pain management; prescribe and administer treatments; provide consultations or refer patients to specialists; conduct and supervise direct patient care; explain risks, dangers, and expectations to patients; consult and follow up in both outpatient and inpatient areas; plan and execute disease prevention and health promotion; participate in on-call schedule; collaborate and participate in multidisciplinary care; timely response to clinical emergencies.

The anesthesiologist provides perioperative care – including pre-operative assessment, intra-operative anesthetic administration and monitoring, and post-anesthesia care in compliance with national accreditation standards.

The anesthesiologist will provide expert consultation and guidance to CRNA, nursing, and other medical staff in the administration of anesthesia.

The physician is responsible for direct provision of perioperative anesthetic care and is expected to be proficient and privileged in all aspects of anesthesiology.

Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting.

Work Schedule: Full-time, 7:30 am – 3:30 pm, Monday – Friday.
