Physician – Staff Cardiologist

Base pay range: $360,000.00/yr – $380,000.00/yr.

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student‑loan reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.
Basic Requirements
United States citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent degree in osteopathic medicine.
Degree obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to board certification.
Any VA physician involved in academic training may be required to be board certified for faculty status.
Board‑certification candidates in accredited ACGME or AOA residencies, or other residencies followed by a minimum of five years of verified U.S. practice, may be considered.
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency programs who meet the basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs).
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis.
PRPs are not independently licensed and will not be privileged.
PRPs will have a scope of practice allowing them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical requirements in accordance with VA Directive and Handbook 5019.

Duties

Provide general Cardiology services in keeping with good clinical practice and the standards of the Cardiology Section and Medicine Service at the Syracuse Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and SUNY Upstate Medical University.
Provide outpatient care and perform clinical procedures within the Cardiology Section.
Supervise and coordinate education of Cardiology fellows, medical residents, and medical students during rotations.
Collaborate with the university affiliate to promote education, research, and evidence‑based patient care.
Collaborate with physician extenders and nursing care providers in the Cardiology Section.
Serve as a resource for Primary Care providers for timely care and appropriate referrals.
Provide expertise in multispecialty and patient‑care discussions.
Participate as a staff physician in the Medicine and Cardiology subspecialty sections in developing ongoing research, quality improvement, and teaching.
Provide inpatient and outpatient Cardiology consultation services and related education to provider staff.
Be an active member of the Cardiology Department of the Syracuse Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Obtain and maintain Cardiology board certification and training.
Serve on peer‑review and other committees as requested by the Medical Center Director, Chief of Staff, Chief of Medicine, and/or Chief of Cardiology sections.
Maintain compliance with Medical Staff bylaws and timely completion of medical records via CPRS in accordance with VA policies.
Participate in ongoing process improvements within your specialty to promote quality, efficiency, patient safety, and timely access to veterans’ care.
Engage in teaching internal medicine residents and undergraduate medical students.
Complete quarterly chart reviews and other quality assurance work.
Ensure timely record completion for all patients as outlined in the Department of Medicine.
Attend quarterly General Medical Staff meetings and monthly Medicine department staff meetings during duty periods.
Promote a cooperative and collegial environment within your area.
May have direct oversight of care rendered by an advanced practice provider.
Collaborate across nursing, pharmacy, and other ancillary personnel to ensure safe and reliable delivery of care.
Work schedule: Full time – Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm or as determined by the service.
