The Town of Edgartown is hiring for two full-time, year-round positions to assist the safe and efficient operations of the wastewater treatment facility and collection system. Available positions are forty hours per week with competitive benefits and training opportunities. Training and experience in the fields of chemistry and engineering preferred.

POSITION Plant Operator ($32.54–$42.80)

– Handles skilled work in the operation and upkeep of the facility. This includes inspections, preventive maintenance, repairs, responding to customer calls, and collecting and testing samples. Applicants need a high school diploma and valid Massachusetts driver’s license, training or experience in fields like chemistry or engineering, at least three years of related work, and a valid Grade 4 Wastewater Treatment License.

WASTEWATER DEPARTMENT DEFINITION

Responsible for skilled technical work in the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment facility and collection system; and other related work as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Provides daily operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment facility and collection system;

Performs daily inspections of plant equipment, machinery, and performs preventive maintenance as needed;

Changes and lubricates bearings, changes and adjusts belts, rotates machinery, performs oil changes and repairs mechanical seals as needed;

May monitor computer readings, inputs data into computer system;

May maintain trucks and other vehicles;

Performs equipment checks and maintains accurate records of same;

Performs numerous repairs and accurately records work done;

Performs inspections and maintenance of grounds and facilities;

Assists septage haulers as needed;

May perform lab tests related to septage;

Responds to inquiries from the public regarding department operations and refers to appropriate personnel;

Collects samples and performs laboratory tests and maintains accurate records;

Provides response to customers for a variety of calls including pump chamber alarms;

Inspects collection systems, including lift stations and power generators and may perform maintenance as needed;

Prepare for storms and respond in storms and other emergencies as needed;

May respond to odor control complaints;

Perform sewer connection inspections;

Required to work on weekends and holidays on a rotating basis and as needed and is on call 24 hours a day on a rotating basis;

Performs related duties as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED Under general supervision. The employee is familiar with the work routine and uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently. The supervisor provides additional, specific instruction for new, difficult or unusual assignments, including suggested work methods. The employee refers unusual situations to the supervisor for advice and further instructions.

ACCOUNTABILITY The nature of work means that errors are usually detected in succeeding operations. Consequences of errors, missed deadlines or poor judgment may include time loss caused by back checking by others and slowdowns in the processing of the work. Errors are generally confined to a single department, such as billing or accounting errors and/or failure to check a subordinate’s performance.

JUDGMENT The work involves numerous standardized practices, procedures, or general instructions that govern the work and in some cases may require additional interpretation. Judgment is needed to locate, select and apply the most pertinent practice, procedure, regulation or guideline.

COMPLEXITY The work consists of a variety of duties which generally follow standardized practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines. The sequence of work and/or the procedures followed vary according to the nature of the transaction and/or the information involved, or sought, in a particular situation.

NATURE AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTS Relationships are primarily with co-workers, vendors and the public, involving frequent explanation, discussion or interpretation of practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines in order to render service, plan or coordinate work efforts, or resolve operating problems. Other regular contacts are with service recipients and employees of outside organizations. More than ordinary courtesy, tact and diplomacy may be required to resolve complaints or deal with hostile, uncooperative or uninformed persons.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE High School diploma or equivalent and training in a field such as chemistry, biology or engineering and three years of experience, preferably in municipal wastewater operations; or an equivalent combination of education, experiences and licenses.

Must possess a valid Grade 4 Massachusetts Wastewater Treatment License.

Must possess a valid Massachusetts driver’s license.

KNOWLEDGE ABILITY & SKILL Must have knowledge of the principles and operational procedures of a wastewater treatment plant and sanitary sewer system; materials, methods and techniques essential to the operation of a wastewater treatment facility; state and federal water pollution control regulations.

Must have skill in troubleshooting, maintenance, repair and problem resolution.

Must have the ability to operate blowers, compressors, pumps, electrical panels, oxygen meters, pH meters and other equipment related to facility operations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT Working conditions involve exposure to intermittent machine or related noise or a combination of unpleasant elements such as odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt or grease. Includes work under typical shop conditions or outdoor work. Incumbent may be required to work beyond normal business hours in response to emergency situations.

PHYSICAL, MOTOR, AND VISUAL SKILLS Physical Skills

Administrative work is performed in an office setting requiring sitting, standing, walking. When in the field, requires agility and physical strength, such as moving in or about construction sites or over rough terrain, or standing or walking most of the work period. Work requires lifting heavy objects and carrying them, typically between 50-100 pounds.

Motor Skills

Duties involve assignments requiring application of hand and eye coordination with finger dexterity and motor coordination.

Visual Skills

Visual demands require routinely reading documents for general understanding and analytical purposes.
