Job Summary Under general supervision, is responsible for performing advanced sanitation services and inspection work in a local health unit. Performs inspections, surveys, and control measures in a specified area of the City. Exercises technical supervision over assigned staff.

The San Antonio Metro Health District (SAMHD) provides public health services to clients, which may include risk for exposure to and possible transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases. Staff in high-risk positions will be required to obtain relevant immunizations, per SAMHD Policy DM4.16. Review and consideration will be given to requests for exemption from this policy. Work Hours 7:00 a.m. - 3:45 p.m., Monday - Friday; occasional weekends

Essential Job Functions

Performs inspections and code enforcement activities requiring technical expertise within a particular environmental health code enforcement program.

Participates with Engineers and Sanitarian I's in gathering test samples for enforcement of quality control regulations.

Interprets results of laboratory findings on samples submitted from private and public water supplies and sewage disposal plants and recommends needed corrective measures.

Supervises Sanitarian I's in instructing the public in better methods of general sanitation.

Performs special and miscellaneous duties as required, including sampling of products, giving talks to groups, and sanitation surveys.

Performs detailed tasks concerned with rodent, fly, and mosquito control projects.

Prepares written reports on inspection findings; outlines any violation of regulations; and recommends corrective measures to be taken or possible court action.

Investigates food poisoning outbreaks at the direction of supervisory personnel.

Performs certificate of occupancy inspections.

Inspects food and drink establishments, including bakeries, public eating places, candy manufacturers, grocery stores, meat markets, food warehouses, and other miscellaneous food establishments.

Inspects establishments and sites with regard to water, sewage, solid waste, swimming pools, industrial hygiene, and noise abatement, which involves carrying a laptop, printer, pool kit, ice chest, or other miscellaneous supplies weighing up to fifteen (15) pounds.

Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university that includes at least thirty (30) semester hours in basic or applied science.

No substitution for education allowed.

Two (2) years of experience as a Sanitarian.

Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.

Registration as a Professional Sanitarian in Texas.

Applicant Information

Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

Ability to supervise, train, and evaluate assigned staff.

Ability to obtain, research, and organize pertinent health related information and data.

Ability to present case to staff attorney and answer questions regarding violations of pertinent laws.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.

Ability to work with agencies in resolving issues of public health significance.

Ability to perform all the essential functions of the position, with or without accommodations.

Ability to work inside and outside with occasional exposure to temperature variations, damp/wet surfaces, hazardous materials, dust, bodily fluids, infectious diseases, and unfavorable fumes, vapors, and odors.
