Pay Range:
$275,000.00/yr – $375,000.00/yr
Summary:
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval and award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications:
To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements outlined below, as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in the VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
United States Citizenship – non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
Degree of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
Degree must have been obtained from a VA‑approved school in the year the course of study was completed.
Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia.
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core‑specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification.
Approved residencies include ACGME‑accredited programs, AOA-accredited programs, or other non‑U.S. residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States.
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA‑accredited residency programs who meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs).
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis; they are not considered independent practitioners and have a restricted scope of practice under supervision.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Preferred experience: fellowship training in surgical oncology, specifically ACGME‑accredited Complex General Surgical Oncology (CGSO), robotic skills/experience.
Physical requirements in accordance with VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
Duties:
Position located in the Department of Surgery – General Surgery Service at Albany Stratton VA Medical Center, Albany, New York, supporting the Network 2 Mission to care for our Veterans with compassion and excellence.
Responsible for providing direct patient care and surgery, teaching, and resident supervision within the General Surgery Section.
All duties carried out throughout the VA Medical Center in Albany, New York.
Follow established VA guidelines, ethics, policies, and protocols.
Act as a cooperative and collegial team member with the entire staff.
Perform surgical procedures and provide pre‑operative and post‑operative care for major and minor procedures.
Maintain excellent diagnostic and therapeutic acumen.
Participate in a shared rotation of night, weekend, and on‑call coverage.
Work schedule variable – nights, weekends, holidays with call expectation.
Participate in and manage all aspects of the general surgery program, including clinical, administrative, and academic components.
Participate in program administration, quality improvement, and policy development.
Provide consultation for inpatient and outpatient patients.
Compensation & Benefits:
Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, and regular salary increases.
Paid time off: 50‑55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, plus possible 5‑day paid absence for CME).
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting), federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution.
Federal health, vision, dental, term life, long‑term care, and many federal insurance programs that can be carried into retirement.
Full, unrestricted license from any U.S. state or territory; CME possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full‑time with board certification).

No physician employment contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting.
