For us, helping you grow your career is good business. Leidos is seeking Distribution Engineers in the New Orleans, LA area who are passionate about electric utility design engineering. You’ll be working directly with clients to ensure that Leidos’ reputation for high‑quality work is always maintained. In this role you will gain expertise in NESC, Structural Pole Modeling, Electrical Power Calculations, GIS design training, Field Data Collection, and Client Design Standards.

This position has remote‑working capabilities, but candidates must be located in the greater New Orleans area so that we can provide support to our local utility customer as needed. The selected candidate(s) will be expected to be available for in‑person meetings and assignments throughout the customer territory on an as‑needed basis.

As a Distribution Engineer, You Can Expect To

Perform design engineering for Leidos electric utility customers; you may also be performing individual design tasks in addition to QC efforts within your group

Contribute to your team’s work packages for OH, UG, URD, Make Ready, and Street Light projects, using customer GIS and Work Management systems

Work with other engineers and design leads on broad client issues including schedule adherence and team quality control; manage scope, schedule, and budget of work assigned

Review engineering design packages with clients; perform functional tasks, planning, and/or customer follow‑up

Perform scope analysis of work assigned and maintain schedule adherence to advocate client priorities

Initiate continuous improvement to workflow processes that drive efficiency and high‑quality standards in client design deliverables

Coordinate conflicting utilities and other field engineering design requirements, assessing and developing large design packages for complex cable/conduit projects in dense urban environments, work‑permit development, easements, and ROW applications

Be comfortable in both a field and office setting: the role may require some customer‑site visits to collect field data that will assist in developing work packages

Be available for customer‑facing activities and/or meetings on an as‑needed basis (job‑related travel will be reimbursed at IRS‑approved rates)

What Sets You Apart (Background Requirements)

2+ years of prior relevant experience either working directly with an electric utility or an electric utility consulting company performing design engineering for electric distribution

BS in an engineering discipline (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Industrial preferred) from an ABET‑accredited program/institution; additional relevant experience/certifications may be considered in lieu of an engineering bachelor’s degree

Background in and demonstrated proficiency with the National Electric Safety Code (NESC)

Some prior knowledge of structural analysis, guying calculations, cable pulling calculations, coordination of protective devices, and electric demand and fault‑current calculations

Ability to provide your own reliable transportation, as some customer‑related travel may be anticipated (job‑related travel will be reimbursed at IRS‑approved rates)

Ability to demonstrate strong written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills

You Might Also Have Some Previous Experience With

Providing estimated costs, development of a BOM, calculating the CIAC

MicroStation – performing Electrical Distribution design

Work management software and job estimating software

CAD tools
