Job Description
We are seeking a motivated, client-focused Elder Law Attorney to join our team and contribute to our continued growth and commitment to excellence.
Duties & Responsibilities
Advise clients (and family members or fiduciaries) on estate planning tools (wills, trusts, powers of attorney, advance directives)
Design and implement Medicaid planning strategies (e.g. asset protection, eligibility planning)
Handle guardianship, conservatorship, and related proceedings
Manage probate and trust administration matters
Conduct legal research, stay current on state and federal elder law, Medicaid, taxation, and related statutes/regulations
Prepare, draft, and review legal documents, contracts, court filings, and correspondence
Represent clients in court and/or administrative hearings (e.g. guardianship, contested matters)
Counsel clients through difficult decisions, often in emotionally charged circumstances
Collaborate with other attorneys, paralegals, and support staff to provide excellent client focused services
Participate in business development: give presentations, lead seminars/webinars, produce client education content
Maintain client relationships, manage case files timely, billable hours, and client communications
Ensure compliance with ethical rules and legal standards
Required Qualifications
J.D. degree from an accredited law school
Active license to practice law in Michigan
Minimum of 3–5 years of experience (or more) in estate planning, probate/trusts, guardianships/conservatorships (Medicaid planning is a PLUS!)
Skilled legal drafting, writing, and analytical abilities
Excellent interpersonal, listening, and client-communication skills
Empathy, patience, and ability to explain complex legal matters in understandable terms
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple cases simultaneously
Ability to meet deadlines, work independently, and collaborate effectively with a team
Comfort with public speaking/education, such as seminars or webinars, client events
Proficiency in office technology (case management software, document management systems, MS Office suite)
Preferred / Desirable Skills & Traits
Membership in NAELA or other elder law professional associations
Experience handling contested guardianship or litigation
Ability to travel among firm offices (Big Rapids, Cadillac, Gaylord, Traverse City)
Comfort with remote work / virtual meetings
