Compensation

Pay Range: $54.23 - $81.35 USD Hourly

Position Summary

The perfect candidate needs to be a dependable, team player with a great attitude, and be flexible with our fast turnarounds. They will work closely with the VFX Supervisor and VFX Producer in achieving the highest creative and technical standards of work. As a Company 3/Method Inc Digital Matte Painter, you will be proficient at digitally painting photo‑real environments and landscapes primarily using Photoshop. You’ll be responsible for creating photorealistic paintings that are used as an element to either embellish or replace live‑action footage. As a Digital Matte Painter, you’ll also paint photo environments, elements, and textures to match into live‑action plates or stand as their own matte painting plates.

Main Duties

Create digital paintings of photo‑realistic environments based on concept art and or photo reference

Provide or acquire photographic reference materials

Work closely with Supervisors to produce paintings and elements that match concepts

Paint 2D and 3D paintings for digital environments including Camera Setup, Modeling for Projection, Camera Animation, Projection; Setup, Image Re‑Projection, and apply Atmospherics and Light Effects

Integrate matte paintings into 3D environments using Maya and/or Nuke

What You Bring

Expert working knowledge of Photoshop

Experience creating digital paintings of photo‑realistic environments based on concept art or photo reference

A strong understanding of light, color, and perspective

Excellent artistic communication skills and an eye for detail

Solid knowledge and understanding of visual effects pipelines, production, and implementation, and the ability to work well in a team

Strong knowledge of advanced matte painting techniques including color space, digital paint techniques, and Photoshop file management

Good knowledge and ability with perspective, color, and value matching

Good knowledge of camera focal lengths and composition

Knowledge of film resolution and aspect ratios

A good understanding of 2D and 3D workflows within a feature film environment

Business Systems Experience

Demonstrable experience integrating matte paintings into 3D environments using Maya and/or Nuke; flexibility to produce concept art from scratch
