Position Summary This recruitment is for two (2) UNC Police Officer Trainee positions. The main purpose of the UNC Police Officer position is to protect and serve students, faculty, staff, and visitors of UNC Chapel Hill through law enforcement and crime prevention. The selected candidate(s) will patrol campus, investigate complaints and violations of state laws and local ordinances using a Community-Oriented Policing philosophy, develop and implement preventative patrol techniques, and perform specialized duties to deter crime and promote effective safety and security practices.
Responsibilities
Patrol campus and investigate complaints and violations of state laws and local ordinances.
Develop and implement preventative patrol techniques to deter crime.
Attend a 5-6 month full‑time Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) course and successfully complete BLET.
Pass the state BLET written exam and achieve certification as a Law Enforcement Officer.
Complete department orientation, field training program, and probationary period.
Serve as an essential Emergency Duty Employee; report to work as required during emergencies.
Subdue resisting suspects, use appropriate force, and operate law‑enforcement vehicles under emergency conditions.
Perform searches, issue citations, and handle emergency calls.
Maintain accurate incident reports and comply with all university policies.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High School diploma or GED.
Eligibility to attend NC Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Academy, meeting all relevant background check and physical agility requirements.
Successful completion of state-mandated probationary period.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Age at least 20 years at the time of appointment.
Valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
Clear background investigation with no felony convictions.
Completed psychological testing, polygraph examination, drug screening, and physical examination.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Proficiency in using force appropriately and exercising independent judgment for use of force decisions.
Ability to defend self and others during physical altercations.
Willingness to report to work in accordance with established schedule or on notification during emergencies.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited community college or university.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Meeting physical and psychological requirements of the NC Criminal Justice Education and Standards Commission.
Polygraph examination required.
Capability to subdue resisting suspects, pursue fleeing suspects, perform searches, command emergency personnel, and endure verbal or mental abuse.
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities
Designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act.
Report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training on reporting responsibilities.
