Exempt Professional Staff (EPS) Primary Purpose of the Organization

The primary purpose of the organization unit is to protect the life and property of the students, faculty, and staff on the campus of Fayetteville State University and to support the University’s core mission of academic excellence by providing comprehensive and professional public safety services and convenient access to a peaceful and orderly campus community. Primary Purpose of the Position

This is an open recruitment for a sworn campus police officer position to include lateral experienced hires from other law enforcement agencies within or outside the State of North Carolina at the hiring agency’s discretion. Based on a selected candidate’s previous years of experience as a certified campus, local, state, or federal law enforcement officer (LEO), this position may be appointed as either a Police Officer I, II, III. Preference is afforded to candidates presently certified as a North Carolina LEO. This is professional work involving enforcing the law of the State of North Carolina and the United States Government at Fayetteville State University. Employees have full law enforcement authority within a limited geographic jurisdiction, ranging from traffic control to criminal investigations. Work involves patrolling an assigned area, responding to and investigating complaints or calls, and detecting violations of State Laws and applicable regulations. Conduct self-initiated security checks to protect people and property, including zone checks and building walk-thru; lock and unlock as necessary. Report and resolve traffic problems, safety concerns, and other hazards. Detect and deter crime with the ability to understand crime activities and trends. Use proper questioning techniques and interrogation skills to obtain information from witnesses, victims, and suspects. Establish and secure crime scenes and perform basic processing of the crime scene. Record facts and prepare reports to document preliminary and follow-up investigations. Responsibilities include apprehending observed violators, collecting and preserving evidence and ensuring chain of custody, performing DWI arrests, testimony in court proceedings as necessary, and performing related work. Managing traffic checkpoints, investigating traffic accidents with property and serious injury. Properly execute search and arrest warrants and serve other criminal and/or traffic citations or summons. Investigate student conduct issues and testify as a witness at student hearings. Use and maintain law enforcement equipment, including firearms, batons, pepper spray, radios, emergency lights, siren, Mobile Data Terminal, and other equipment. Employees may serve as a lead officer on an assigned shift and can act as a team leader under Incident Command. Position may require shift, weekend, holiday, and overtime work. Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Minimum Requirements For a Police Officer I Police Officer I: Zero to two years of experience. Minimum of a High School diploma or GED. At least probationary certification from the NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer and successful completion of the appointing agency’s designated field training program for newly appointed Campus Police Officers. Applicants with two years or more of documented experience as a sworn campus, local, state, or federal law enforcement officer may be eligible for appointment at a higher entry rank and level At The Hiring Agency’s Discretion As Follows

Police Officer II: Minimum of High School or GED and two (2) years of experience as a sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement officer. Current certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible within an agency specified timeframe. Police Officer III: Minimum of a High School diploma or GED and four (4) years of experience as a sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement officer. Current certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible within an agency specified timeframe. Master Police Officer I: six (6) years of prior experience as a sworn law enforcement officer. A graduate or Juris Doctor degree reduces the minimum experience requirement by 1 year. Preferred Qualifications
