Responsibilities & Qualifications The Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector is responsible for performing field inspections and testing to verify compliance with approved structural drawings, specifications, and applicable building codes. This role ensures that reinforcing steel, concrete placement, and related structural components meet the standards established by ACI, IBC, and project requirements.
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent experience).
Experience:
Minimum 2 years of construction inspection experience in NYC, covering projects of varying size and complexity.
Code Knowledge:
Working familiarity with Chapter 17 of the NYC Building Code.
Certifications:
ICC Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector certification OR ACI Concrete Construction Special Inspector – Level II certification (required).
ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I (required).
ACI Concrete Construction Special Inspector (required).
ICC Soils Special Inspector – not required, but a plus!
Additional Requirements:
Minimum 2 years of experience performing reinforced concrete and rebar inspections on structural projects.
Thorough knowledge of ACI 318, ACI 301, ACI 117, CRSI Manual of Standard Practice, and IBC Chapter 17 special inspection requirements.
Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, rebar schedules, and project specifications.
Proficiency in verifying rebar size, spacing, placement, and lap splices prior to concrete placement.
Experience documenting inspections, preparing daily field reports, and communicating non-conformances.
Familiarity with AWS D1.4 welding requirements for reinforcing steel (preferred).
Strong understanding of concrete mix design, placement, curing, and testing procedures.
Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to multiple project sites as needed.
Current training in fall protection, scaffolding and ladders, and work-zone safety, with a minimum of OSHA 10-hour Construction Safety certification.
OSHA 30-hour Construction Safety certification preferred.
Preferred Qualifications:
Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to interact effectively with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
Ability to complete and submit inspection reports accurately and on time.
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Willingness to obtain additional certifications as needed.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a project team.
Familiarity with industry codes, standards, and QA/QC procedures.
High school diploma or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree preferred).

Compensation
Salary: $28 – $38/hour (or $30 – $40/hour with ICC Soils certification)
