Assistant Teacher (ELC Paraprofessional) Reports to: Director

Position Overview Under the direction of the lead teacher and director, the assistant teacher is responsible for providing a warm, nurturing, stimulating, safe, and loving environment where each child can develop cognitive, verbal, social, emotional, and physical skills appropriate for their age.

Responsibilities

Assist with planning and implementing a culturally sensitive educational program that is developmentally appropriate for each child’s age and language.

Assist in planning and implementing daily lesson plans based on the approved curriculum to promote cognitive, verbal, social, emotional, and physical development of children.

Assist in conducting ongoing assessment and individualization documentation in a timely manner.

Assist in planning a balanced daily routine that encourages play, exploration, and learning, including teacher‑directed and child‑directed activities inside and outside the classroom.

Provide a developmentally appropriate, stimulating learning environment that includes new and interesting materials each week and supports the developmental levels of all children, including those with special needs.

Conduct daily health checks on each child.

Plan weekly activities that promote a healthy lifestyle.

Follow policies regarding medical emergencies, short‑term exclusion, medication handling, and safety procedures to prevent injuries.

Maintain sanitation and hygiene procedures and assist with overall center upkeep.

Provide nutrition support: eat with children, encourage proper eating habits, serve food, adhere to feeding schedules, and hold infants who cannot yet sit independently during feeding.

Attend parent meetings, inform parents of progress through notes, portfolios, and conferences, and assist in planning family involvement activities.

Participate in professional development trainings and workshops, completing a minimum of 35 in‑service training hours annually.

Maintain confidentiality at all times.

Qualifications

Practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church is preferred.

Minimum high school diploma or GED.

DCF 45‑hour training preferred; if not completed, must start within 30 days of hire and finish within six months.

Prior experience in a child‑care setting is preferred.

Knowledge of child growth and development and developmentally appropriate practices for children ages birth to 5 years.

Knowledge of applicable safety and abuse reporting procedures.

Must pass a criminal background check prior to employment and every five years; complete Protecting God’s Children (PGC) workshop prior to employment.

Must complete tuberculosis screening and a medical physical within ten days of hire and every two years thereafter.

Must register and complete Infant & Child First Aid and CPR certification within six months of hire and renew prior to expiration.

Must complete 35 hours of in‑service training each fiscal year.

Strong communication skills and the ability to read, write, and present information clearly.
