Overview
Join to apply for the Cancer Abstractor 2025-02489 role at State of Wyoming. This position performs a variety of tasks associated with the management, implementation, and retention of a large, complex, and highly confidential cancer records system. Review and interpret statewide cancer information from medical records, pathology departments, hospitals, free-standing surgery centers, clinics, oncology, and radiation oncology centers to determine and code primary site(s), histological type, stage of disease, sites of metastases, and treatment given. Screen pathology, cytology reports, hospital disease index, and vital records death index for reportable cancer cases. Analyze and abstract cancer data with complex coding from medical records and enter data into cancer registry software according to ACos guidelines. Perform continual quality assurance audits on abstracted medical data to ensure accuracy and completeness in accordance with NAACCR standards. Provide feedback to reporting entities regarding data quality and send queries to physicians for detailed diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up information. Collect follow-up and additional treatment information on patients to determine spread, recurrences, or additional malignancies. Essential Functions
Identifies reportable neoplasms from screening pathology and cytology reports; enters identified reportable cases into the suspense file and non-reportable neoplasms into the non-reportable file within the database. Conducts follow-up by sending letters for follow-up information to facilities and updates the database with the most current information in accordance with NAACCR. Reviews the hospital disease indices at the beginning of each calendar year for missed reportable cancer cases. Analyzes and abstracts cancer data from medical records including demographics, history, topography, morphology, imaging and scans, diagnostic procedures, extent of disease, surgical procedures, treatment, staging, follow-up, physician information, and other required information in compliance with CDC, ACos, NAACCR, AJCC, and SEER standards; enters data into the master database and interprets/edit computer-generated error reports to maintain quality control. Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s Degree (typically in Records or Data Management) or equivalent; 0-1 year of progressive work experience in Records and Data Management, or 3-4 years with substitution of education for experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Bachelor’s Degree in allied health field (or equivalent). Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology. Knowledge and compliance with HIPAA regulations. Ability to read and comprehend medical documentation (medical records, radiology reports, pathology and cytology reports, physician notes). Experience using Microsoft Excel and Word; strong written and oral communications. Experience
